How do you mean, it wont physically switch on, it wont boot up.

Is there any error displayed if its not booting up.
  • How old is the lappie? Which model?
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
  • Does the laptop do a POST - then attempt to load the OS before the BSOD?

what was the last thing she did with it ?

    1. remove the battery
    2. undo the screws where the memory sits, and reseat them, take them out, and then put them back in.
    3. undo the screw where the harddrive is and make sure it still connected. push it back in if its not.
4 replace battery and turn it on.
if you get a BSOD again what is the error message on screen.

lol andy2004,asking a novice to remove cmos battery from a laptop lol thats is such bad advice.

(thats if they are a novice and you know how to open laptops and without damaging any cables going from screen to board and disconnecting mouse pads and keyboard etc)

I didnt say cmos battery, i meant the large battery that powers the laptop. 1 battery which can be removed without screws which usually has a lock switch and then slides out.

most laptops have a combination FN+ another key to MUTE sound or the volume control is turned down. possibly sound drivers need to be reinstalled. if sound was working before the computer wouldnt turn on. try in this order. turn volume up on the buttons on laptop, connect headphones to output socket and play a mp3 song. if no sound, try the FN key usually bottom left + the keys 1 to 0 across the top/ aka read the manual. and if non of that works, go into device manager and see if theres a yellow ! by sound. Uninstall drivers, then reboot the laptop which should reinstall the drivers.
its also possible that the reason the laptop didnt turn on was a hardware fault cause by the sound card dying.
