I made rice pudding and it didn't thicken... took the lid off and it's starting to get there!
I noticed more my recipes don't thicken in the slow cooker... and I refuse to add flour!!
How many people have this problem...
What's the rule on cooking with the lid off???
Does anyone do that???
Take the lid off for the last 1/2-1hr for it to thicken. My rice pudding never thickens, all the rice swells up and sticks together and it sucks up most of the milk, perfect! If you like creamy rice pudding then maybe stir it more and cook it longer.
Have soup in mine today: lots of veg, veg stock, mustard, herbs, chick peas, will add lentils for the last hour.Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0 -

Hi,
I have had a slow cooker for ages, but not used it. Have got some good ideas recipies now, but was wondering is it cheaper to cook in a slow cooker rather than oven? Does it use less electric?
Thanks0 -
My sc is out after a lengthy break - been too busy planning my wedding to cook!
My DH (:D) has got a stinking cold, so a lamb balti has promptly been put into the sc.
200g diced lamb
two chopped toms
pinch of coriander, cumin, chili powder and tumeric
clove of garlic
half an onion
half a courgette (it needed using)
1/2 pint of vegetable stock
one tablespoon of tomato puree
Haven't done this before so will see what happens, I have got some balti paste on standby just in case it needs thickening
Hi Taadaa, how did the curry turn out, would love to make a curry in slow cooker just need a good recipe, hope your DH is better Kathy0 -
Another nice curry dish is to chuck in mushrooms onto onions, garlic and curry paste, cover with water or tinned tomatoes and add a blob of mango chutney. Stir in yoghurt and coriander at the end of cooking, possibly with a little more chutney.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0

I made a huge sausage casserole in mine today
12 pork and apple sausages browned first then chopped
5 medium sizes potatoes quatered with skin on
2 tins tomatoes (chopped)
1 box of pasatta
2 large handfulls of cherry tomatoes from the garden (halved)
1 glass of red wine that had been open for about 3 weeks
2 large onions chopped and fried off first
Half of a green pepper that was lurking in the bottom of the fridge
2 sliced mushrooms also found lurking in the fridge
2 sticks of celery
a large handfull of pearl barley, one of lentils and two of porridge oats
2 chicken stock cubes
splash of worstershire sauce
Pepper
This fed four of us tonight , four more portions will be turned into currry later in the week with some added Quinoa (as niece does not eat rice) four portions into the freezer and two smaller portions to take to work with a baked spud for lunches.
The kitchen smelled great when I got in from workI am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order.

After watching the Great British Bake Off last night I have been inspired to make pies. The fave in our house is steak pie but I was thinking of getting a cheaper cut and slow cooking. Does anyone do pie fillings in there slow cooker?
What recipes does anyone else have.0 -

I put a brisket joint in mine with some onions and a can of guinness, when the beef is done i seperate it into small pieces and put it into individual pie dishes and then add some of the onions, thicken the sauce and pour a little into each and sometimes add boiled potatoes and/or cooked veg. I only make pastry for the top. I then freeze these and defrost before cooking or whack them straight into the oven if they are for eating straight away.
This makes for fabby pies, absolutely delicious and they taste like very expensive ones for a fraction of the price. The best thing about the individual dishes is that not too much meat gets put in each one so the joint goes a lot further but it seems like a lot when you`re eating it IYKWIM. Everyone who has tried them is amazed and i have a big stupid grin on my face
