Freeview digital arial

Hello everyone, I'm very confused about digital aerials. According to the freeview website, I live in an area where freeview is not currently available. However, my next door neighbour fitted a so called digital aerial and is getting the freeview channels through a TV with built in freeview. Now I been told that there is no such thing as a digital aerial, so how can he get digital channels in an area where freeview is not available. I'd be grateful if someone would explain.

There is no such thing as a " digital aerial ", I also live in a non freeview area, yet I get all Freeview Channels on a 30 year old external aerial.

Don't trust the Freeview Site to give an absolutely accurate forecast, if your neighbour gets Freeview, chances are you will on a similar aerial.

Buy a cheap freeview box and try it, with you existing aerial.

Thanks for your replies. I came across something called DVB-T indoor digital aerials are these worth spending money on to receive freeview?

I doubt it, as the Freeview site says you already have problems, or no signal, with Freeview an indoor aerial is not the best option

Do as Davetrousers suggests, get a cheap box & use your existing aerial for a starter

As inactive says, there is no such thing as a "digital aerial".

Many people find that their existing aerial will not receive digital (Freeview) broadcasts because (amongst other things) the transmitter to which it points does not carry digital, or the digital signal is much weaker than the analogue one. In the latter case, a more powerful (sensitive) aerial may work.

It's also not so clear cut to say yes you can get reception at your location or no you can't, but the website has to have a cut-off point where it says "no". The fact that your neighbour can receive it suggests to me that you are at the fringes of coverage and will need a rooftop aerial at least. Your neighbour may be able to recommend the rigger that fitted his aerial.

Almost certainly a waste of time and money, a well fitted external aerial of the correct size and type is your best option.

Then if it doesn't work talk to your neighbour and copy what he has had done.

Good point. lindabea do you have a roof top or external aerial at present? If so, how does that fair?

Thank you all for your replies. I'm currently using Sky in my living room, but I've seen a small 7in TV at maplins with built in digital receiver/digital aerial. I'm rather tempted to get this to use in my kitchen as it sounds a very simple process (if it works) without having to pay extra for sky multroom or indeed run cables across to the kitchen. This is why I thought that if my next door neighbour is able to receive freeview, then so should I despite the freeview website stating that I can't get freeview in my area. Is my thinking correct or will I be wasting my money? I don't particularly want to install an outside aerial if I can use an indoor aerial. I don't have an outside aerial, so unfortunately I can't try a freeview box.

I am 99% certain that it will not work, you are obviously in a weak signal area, it will need an external aerial to work properly.
