Enabling GPRS on old O2 2G SIMs

I'm on one of the old SIM only BT Genie contracts. It's great value for money but because of its age its not GPRS enabled. I've contacted O2 and they say they won't enable it and "helpfully suggest" I switch onto one of their current (much more expensive) online contracts.
Does anyone know what will happen if I "lose" my SIM and therefore have to request a replacement. Will the new SIM be GPRS enabled or will it just be a wasted exercise involving me paying the replacement SIM cost?
Thanks in advance for any help I get on this.
