Apart from the 16 weeks that Gordon Brown used me for money laundering, I have been applying for work constantly in that time and managed to get a whopping two interviews.
Have you rewritten your CV or at least gotten someone (a recruitment consultant for instance) to give it the once over? If you've already had those interviews, did you ask the interviewers for feedback?

I take it you're in Scotland? Are you willing to relocate?

Unfortunately the longer you're unemployed, and not gaining any experience, the less attractive to employers you become. If you are not having any luck finding paid employment, I would definitely consider volunteering.

I already have an NC in IT Tech Support, and a Degree in Software Technology, and neither of them have done anything to help me find work. (though I am nicely £15,000 in debt)

Qualifications are a money making scam. I just want to push some boxes around a warehouse.

unfortunately this is the truth, the government encourages as many as possible to go to uni knowing full well there won't be a job for them at the end but just a lot of debt for graduates and money for the government and unis. i have a first class honours degree and not been able to find any paid work.

at least your "Student loan :£11,000" will get written off soon as you've been unable to get a 15k+ job :)

I agree with briona here ....... if you've only had 2 interviews in 2 years it suggests that perhaps your applications are lacking something.

Get someone to look over your applications - it may be something as simple as grammar/literacy. Have you read the job description/person specification and given them as much info about your knowledge/experience in these areas? Do ask for feedback on your application if you didn't get an interview - you might not want to hear what they say but at least you'll know what to do to correct it.

Volunteering sounds like a great idea - OK it's not not going to clear yor debt work but it's something you can put on your CV.

You might them be able to find bar work/till work/shelf-stacking in the evenings to help with your income in the meantime.
  • Have you checked the supermarket websites (Morrisons, Tesco, Asda etc.)? They often don't use third party recruitment websites.
  • A lot of retail jobs place ads in their windows, so going into town with a bagful of CV's and looking in the windows is worth doing- this is how I got my job.
Present yourself, press your clothes, comb your hair, clock in

My CV has been written and rewritten more times than I can count. In fact I didn't even write the one I currently use. It is not exactly easy however to make "nothing" seem like something. :(

Yes, especially if it is outside the UK. :rotfl:

The Job Centre often suggest this, then when they find out you are they try and stop your money. I would consider it (and not tell them) but right now I am in the middle of nowhere.

Usually a work history and references. :(:(

Yes, not even as much as a reply from any of them. In fact I have applied to Tesco 16 times in the last three years and was only ever offered an interview once. (Night shift job that I had no way to get to :( )

This is why I would suggest volunteering to get some skills and experience. JCP will not have a problem with you volunteering as long as it's for a reputable organisation, i.e. not helping your mum's friend's sister out, unless of course she manages an Oxfam shop! ;)

An organisation I used to work for took volunteers, many of whom were on JSA. With JCP's approval, the organisation reimbursed volunteers' travel expenses (on production of a valid bus or train ticket) so that no-one would ever be worse off for volunteering.

That is certainly the picture they paint, but I and others I know have also been told we'll have our allowance stopped unless it is arranged by them. The only chance I was given to volunteer was while I was on Gordon Browns A4e course when I was sent for a day to a used furniture warehouse.

It is rather like the 'Work Trials'. You are only allowed to go on one if you already have the job, else it makes the figures look bad.

As they say "You get what you measure". Set stilly targets for staff and they'll work to meet the targets, not do the job intended of them.

So for two years you've done nothing constructive with your time - no voluntary work, no training, nothing?

Not really surprising you're still unemployed!
