bt broadband

Hi guys, hopefully someone will be able to help me with this.
I moved into a new house on the 9th of dec and signed up with bt for phone line and broadband. this was installed on the 23 dec and since then the broadband has been useless. it didnt work for the first week and could not ring bt till after the xmas break, when i finally got in touch with them and told them the problem they said they would pass it onto an engineer, they rang back to say they couldnt fix it and would need a home visit which eventually sorted the problem over a week after first being installed, that night I turned the homehub off and the next day turned it back on and the broadband light came back on only orange and not blue so rang them again and they passed it onto the engineers and when i got home from work it was working again, since then it has gone off a further three times and I have to phone BT each time and they pass it onto an engineer and within 24 hours it comes back on again. this is gettin beyond the joke now because i do alot of work from home and need the internet to be reliable. as I am still in my first month is it possible to ring BT and tell them they can have there useless broadband back and request a MAC code and find a new supplier? I signed up to an 18 month contract

Thanks for any help

Danny

Can you try a proper router? You'll need your usernam and password for that.
  • I don't have another router to try and don't want to go buy one when part of the contract with bt is a free router

    Thanks

So where is the actual problem? Exchange, line, router, your internal wiring?
Give some more info (not just 'it doesn't work') and maybe the problem can be narrowed down.
Is it a problem with the phone line or just the broadband?

  • sorry, I am not sure were the problem is, basically what happens is everytime I reset the router or turn it off. when i turn it back on it stops working. but when i ring BT they pass it on to an engineer and they ring back saying it was a problem with something on there side. whch is a bit weird considering its happened three times. I am guessing its a problem with the modem as its fine until i reset/turn it off, and my girlfriend has a habit of turning all the swithches off before she comes to bed.

    thanks Danny

Why do you need to reset it or turn it off? This means that every time you switch it back on it needs to resynch your line with the exchange.
If you've been doing this since new it may never have achieved a stable connection.
I would leave it back on for a week or so to see if a stable connection can be established.
Power consumption of a router is minimal.

  • ah is that the problem? it did say 10 days with varying speed whilst it makes the optimal connection speed or something. I have told my gf to leave it on but she is in the habit of turning off all the sockets before bed and the homehub is in an extension socket with the tv, dvd, wii and a lamp. will try moving the router so that it is in its own socket and put a big note on it so she leaves it alone :)

    thanks

Suprised the BT engineer didn't tell you not to switch it off,you did tell him didn't you?

PS: what do you mean by 'reset the router'? If you are doing a 'factory restore' on it by pressing the reset button (usually on the rear panel), then that would wipe all your account settings and they would need to be re-entered before you could get any connection at all.
I don't understnd why you would 'reset' it if it was working OK?
