I'd say a couple of sheets and a couple of blankets. I have about 10 blankets i've never used other people bought me. When my son was small I used a top sheet folded in half accross the top of his bed (Gina Ford trick) so that if he was sick I could remove that, put a new one in place and bobs your uncle! Save changing the whole bed!0

I had 4 moses basket sheets (2 fitted, 2 flat) the 2 fitted were in rotation, and the two flat ones were left in their packet as they were never used. My DD was a very sicky baby, but I would just put a muslin down (or a flat washable/ terry nappy) so I didn't have to change the lot.
You can also use pillow cases as moses basket sheets, especially if you have a 'messy' baby, as you can turn it over if it needs changing in the night and you don't have to bother faffing about with new sheet etc until the morning.
Blanket wise we had about 8 but we had our fave 3 that we used in rotation and the rest stayed in the drawer.
We used a grobag (well cheapy version) from when DD was about 4 months but only as that was when she went into cot, she didn't have enough room to kick off covers in her basket!0 -
With the sleeping bag thing: they are suitable as long as the baby head cannot pass down through the neck gap when they are fastened IYKWIM, so they can be used from newborn as long as bag is small enough/baby is big enough but personally I only started using them from 2 mths x
Don't forget if you have a pram or carrycot that you'll prob use the same blankets for that also. I would say at least 3 sheets and 5/6 blankets in the house
Primark do a lovely supersoft blanket0 -
When my baby was in her moses basket her fleece sheets were too warm so I would cover that with a cotton cool pillowcase, and it would mean just changing the pillowcase more frequently than the sheet.
In her cot I have a few fitted sheets but mostly single and double sheets that I can use for her bed.
The beauty iof using a big sheet is if she is sick during the night i dont have to change the sheet I can just move it along and sort it the next day.
I bought too many blankets - In reality you would only need one on, 2 spare and one in the wash - so 4 and I would use sheeting under the blanket and make the baby the right temperature with clothes more than blankets iykwim?
I didnt use growbags till she was around 2-3 months as I only had 2/5tog oens and they were too warm. I would get some 1 tog and some 2.5 tog if it is a mild spring - wouldnt get anymore than 3 to last you the 6 months.
Congrats! xx50p/£24.00 Xmas 2010:rudolf:
