  • Do you folk have "check-a-trade" in your area?
I've used tradesmen through this scheme and they have all been good.
    Friendly greeting!

Have a shufty here, all might be explained:

Regarding your difficulty in getting quotes, that's nothing new to me. I find it usually takes about a month, and a two or three dozen calls just to get three quotes for a job from tradesmen. First there are the ones who don't call back, then the ones who don't turn up, then the ones who turn up but don't send a quote.

I think what puts them off is that you're asking for a quote, they probably prefer customers who just hire someone without asking the price first.
  • For anyone who's interested, Radio 4 You and Yours program are doing a piece about boiler replacement next Monday. From the trailer, I gather alot of folk have been complaining that the new condensing boilers are too unreliable, which is the reason why I won't be changing.

Sometimes you just have to go with BG. My friend got a quote from BG and after recovering from the heart attack started looking around.

Firm one never turned up, second quote was £1000 less than BG but didn't know when he could get it done, third quote was also cheaper but 2 months before he could do anything.

All this time my friend was running up a massive electricity bill trying to keep warm so she phoned BG and said OK when can you begin.

Week later she had a new heating system and a year's free maintenace contract.

As she said, sometimes, you just have to pay the money.

as the boiler is not in working order, we do not qualify for the scrappage scheme

Makes a mockery of the scrappage scheme doesn't it? It makes no environmental sense to rip out a good working boiler "to save the planet" or a few quid a month in gas.

Is anyone in the household receiving benefits? If so, you may be entitled to get the boiler changed through warmfront, although please bear in mind we have a waiting timescale of about 6 months at the moment x

Looking for holiday ideas for 2016. Currently, Isle of Skye in March, Riga in May, Crete in June and Lake District in October. August cruise cancelled, but Baby due September 2016! :j
  • Going back to the OP - have you actually got a second opinion on whether your existing boiler can actally be repaired before going down the new boiler route. What was the fault that BG condemned it for?

Listened to the programme,(it is on BBC iplayer - at about 9 minutes) bit of damp squib. It was only about some people with condensing boilers having their condensate pipe freeze in the recent severe weather.

Interesting bit about the new curbs on doorstep selling.

On the page that jack_pott linked to above it says "Condensing boilers are compulsory under the Building Regulations in most situations"

    True of false?

    True!

There are some rare exceptions allowed,(certain listed buildings etc) but you have to get planning permission to fit a non-condensing boiler.

You are aware that the OP said she was told Combi boilers are compulsory? and that is not the case.
