Thanks everyone - I'm looking into the tmobile thing - I like the idea of not being able to exceed texts and minutes! Has anyone else used this?

Hiya. I've used the fixed plans... t-mobile are the only network who offer this type of plan, works out well for parents and children.

Basically your child can benefit from the value of a contract plan but the network won't let you do anything outside of your bundle of free minutes and texts. You or your child would basically have to 'top up' like a PAYG phone to make additional calls. You want to look at the "SOLO FIXED" plans on the t-mobile website if you are interested, they come in rolling 30 day contracts i.e. cancel when you like after a month or full 12 month contracts. Remember to get FIXED and not the regular solo plans as they are not the same.

It is impossible to run up a bill on a t-mobile fixed plan. My neighbour is new to the country and can not get a contract. I felt sorry for him running up insane PAYG charges on orange. I took out a fixed contract in my name and he pays me £15 a month to use it. I have NO fear that he can abuse the contract and run up a bill because he is on the FIXED contract and he would have to top up himself. He used to spend ALOT on credit with orange, he now only pays £15 on t-mobile and has not had to top up yet as his mins and texts included in the fixed plan are enough. It is also a rolling contract so I can cancel it at anytime... i trust him a lot but if he left the country I would only ever be £15 out of pocket :)

    Good luck.

My sister in law has used them with her 15 year old son. It's taught him how to manage his minutes/texts and make them last the month. He's now on a contract and behaving.

I have to say though - there is a reason under 18's are not allowed contracts. I've lost count of the calls I've had from narked off parents who's child has run up a huge bill!

Vodafone do a family package whereby you can add her to your "family" so she can always call you (on Vodafone) with or without credit, for free. And then leave her on PAYG so that she can budget for her top ups for texting/calling friends etc. it's kind of the best of both worlds because it will teach her that yes phones do run out of credit, but also means that you need never worry that she's out and can't call you.

this costs £5/£7 per month though.;)
  • Try 3

    they have a £10 a month contract

    Gives you
    75 Mins + Unlimited texts

If you call CS they will apply a credit limit of 0 on the account so only the inclusive allowance can be used plus you get free skype to skype calls and msn messenger plus a free handset.
