Slow Broadband - Please Help

Hope someone can help me. I have Sky broadband and am paying for upto 10mb speeds. At the moment my download speed is between 0.25 and 0.35mb depending on time of day. I live 602 meters from the exchange on the edge of a small town centre. I know that it is 'upto' 10mb but on checking my broadband speeds, it seems that my neighbours are all getting 6.5mb and upwards from different providers. I don't really want to change ISPs as the cost from sky is amazing and if it worked I would be more than happy. I've held off phoning them untill I know a bit more about what I'm talking about.

I don't have an engineers test socket on my main phone socket.
I have tried unplugging everything from my phone line and plugging my router into my main phone socket.
I have also tried hard wiring my pc to the router but nothing has made any difference.

I moved into the house a year ago but am still getting letters from Tiscali for the previous resident threatening to turn off their service if they don't pay outstanding amounts on their accounts - don't know if having 2 isps active on the line would make a difference.

You cant have 2 ISP's on the same line,Tiscali's marker tag's would've been removed when your Sky was set up.
You need to call Sky & get a fault ticket raised thru to the old Tier 2 (Now known as TSG?) where I used to work.(If you get thru to the Lipa center, hang up & re-dial! They are useless!(between us...)
They have the systems there to access your line & change the profile ect & diagnose your problem.
  • spike your are an absolute star. Cheers.
  • Yes get Sky to remote check you line.
It may be a microfilter - They can fail if there is a voltage spike on the phone line. This is the most common cause of a sudden change in performance and/or line call quality.
Buy a decent one, not just a !!!! one off ebay.
There is a thread on microfilters
