Coil removal?

Hi All,

I had an IUD Coil fitted 5 years ago come August so i know i have a few months but have been thinking about removal etc.

Do i just make an appointment with Dr, BF and i have decided to use condoms for a while and then properly start trying for a baby after a few months, neither of us would be upset if we had a suprise ;)

I was just wondering, does it get to like july and then the coil will stop working, does it gradually get weaker?

When i get it removed is it just an appointment at the dr and they just whip it out?

Sorry if this is TMI

to be moneysaving ;) anyone know the cheapest place to get condoms from at the moment? Am thinking a bulk investment might be needed lol

Thanks

  • just make an appointment at the family planning clinic at the docs (the rceptionist will tell you when it is) and they just whip it out for you,
while it has a vague date on it, its more like a best before rather than a use by if you know what i mean...it slowly gets weaker,

do they still do free condoms at proper clinics? its been forever since i used one of them nasty things!
congrats on trying for a baby by the way, hope all goes well xxx

You may need to book a slightly longer appointment with the doc so best to tell the receptionist when booking what it is for. It doesnt take long to take out and is relatively easy to do.

CG yes you can still get free condoms from the clinic
:jFriends are like fabric you can never have enough:j
  • thanks guys, :)

Can i do it through the Dr or do i have to go to the hospital and the family planning clinic?

Just wondering cause it was FP that fitted it for me ....
  • Its easier having it out than having it in! Just ring the doctors and ask for an appointment for a coil removal they'll know who and how long to book you in with. You don't have to wait till August either, I had one out after 18 months as it didn't agree with me, they don't tell you off! ;)

It'll still work but I wouldn't recommend trying to get pregnant while on it as being pregnant with a coil in can cause problems.

    HTH's.

I would have thought that one of the surgery nurses could do that for you.

Good luck on your baby planning.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • thanks guys :)

We are gonna leave it a few months, get it removed and try the condom route and if we get a surprise so be it, then in about 12 months (from now) we are gonna actively start trying and go from there

We still have lots of time :)

Thanks for the help guys :)
  • I had a mirena coil for a few years to help my pcos. I had it placed while under a general as I had a hypscopy and DNC at the same time. It was before I had my children.

I had it removed at my g.p. I booked a double appointment and told them what it was for. I took some pain killers half hour before and took it easy after. My periods took a few months to settle but was ok after. I can't remember if I bleed after but I had more uncomfitable smears than having my coil removed.

    Good luck.

I think only specially trained GPs can remove them and not all surgeries will have the facilities to do it as like the insertion it has to be done under fairly sterile conditions to minimise the risk of infection for your sake. At our surgery (a very large one) they have a room specifically set aside for these type of procedures and out of 12 GPs only 2 are able to insert and remove coils.

I would have it removed sooner rather than later personally - once it starts looking it's effectiveness the chances of ectopic pregnancies increase if you are not taking other precautions. No need to tell you how risky that can be :)

    Thanks Mrs Tine!

I knew that the risk of ectopic pregnancy was greater, but in my head i had not put 2 and 2 together until now!

I will speak to BF and we will make a decision on whats best.

Thanks for all of your help ladies :) x
