Yes that's right, anyone who suggests honesty is the best approach has a problem, and there's nothing wrong with advice that could cause a lot of problems in the longer term. You clearly know there's a problem with your own advice when you preface it with an attack on the people you know will criticise it.

A good idea stands or falls on its own merits. Obviously flawed ideas have to be propped up by tricks and mis-direction. It's painfully obvious which tactics you've gone for and I think its painfully obvious why too.

Hmm, certainly don't want to be committing fraud, but the point about it being a correspondence address is interesting - I mean, you don't think about using your work address to have parcels delivered to, which is similar on some levels...

Ironically, I signed onto the electroll role at my new address in order to help my credit worthiness...

No other credit at the moment, but have been at my well paid permanent job for over 2 years, so figured it must be the address issue.
  • Do you think it could be the fact that you have no other credit? I only mention it because I was accepted for a Barclays Goldfish card and a Play MBNA card when I had been living at my rented flat for about the same time as you. However I had had other credit cards in the past.

Well done. Without that, you'd struggle to get credit of any sort.

If this would be your first credit card, you may have a limited credit history, so from the lender's perspective you're something of an unknown quantity. They are likely to see your lack of a payment history as too great a risk. You probably need to be more concerned about actually getting a starter credit card, rather than looking for the best card to meet your present circumstances.

The bank that holds your main current account is the best place to start, but you may not be issued with the market-leading deal you've seen advertised. That said, many of us here have used credit cards for years free of charge. If you only ever spend what you can afford to pay back on time each month, you'll never pay interest and you'll be building a credit history in the process ;)
