Boiler problem - pressure drop, please help

Hi all,
It's been the case for a few years that I've had to occasionally put the pressure up on the boiler to about 1 bar as required but today when there was no hot water I turned the tap to turn the pressure up which it did quite quickly but I could hear a bit of a slight whistling noise coming from within the boiler as like water was coming out a tap upstairs or something and the pressure would just drop again.
If I leave the tap thing on slightly it maintains the pressure but I'm worried there could be a leak in the central heating somewhere or something.
I switched the boiler off and made sure it was could before increasing the pressure again.
Is there anything I can do or is it a problem with the pressure vessel or something?
Many thanks
