Sunday tea treat

what a lovely reminiscent thread
We used to have sardines (ugh!) bread and butter, cheese, ham, pickles, salad, home made jam tarts and sponge cake or fairy cakes. (Crumpets in winter). All eaten sitting on the lounge floor (only 2 arm chairs in there and Mum & Dad got those) watching Songs of Praise and then the Holiday program.
Washed down with a humungous pot of tea and watched by our cat who was prowling in keen anticipation of a dropped morsel.0 -
Sunday tea was not a grand affair for us it was either mashed banana sandwiches (which I hated) or grated cheese sandwiches with a packet of crisps. My mother still has banana sandwiches every Sunday.
Sunday lunch was mainly a roast with pudding often being sliced bananas and evaporated milk or trifle which was tinned raspberries in raspberry jelly with raspberry blamange (sp)on top then whipped cream with a flake crumbled on it. My sister loved this and would often have it for breakfast on a Monday - yuck. The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -
I wonder if this thread has encouraged any of us to bake this weekend? I made jam tarts last night just because they were on my mind and I hadn't made any for years. The idea was that they would be nice for Sunday teatime... I might have to make some more....:o:o:o;)The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.

Just realised that this thread has been merged with one started by DizzyK in 2010 which I must have missed before... Wondered why it had dried up...The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.

Hi Eenymeeny,
The thread had dropped down to page five of the Old Style board and hadn't been posted in for two days before it was merged, so I really don't think you can blame the merge for the reason the thread 'dried up' as you put it.

Sorry Pink-winged, I didn't mean to cause offence. I just thought that something was usually posted to say that it had been merged. Silly me wondered why the Sunday Treat thread had appeared but didn't read it until tonight. I'll pay attention next time...The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.

Well, I'm glad this thread has been resurrected!
We don't have kids, but I'm thinking I might reinstate Sunday Dinners (at 3pm), followed by a cold Sunday Tea. Perhaps not every week, but at least once a month and when we have visitors.
I've been invited to friend's this weekend for Sunday Dinner, but they've warned me it will be at tea-time (7pm ish)....glad they explained as I'd have been half starved by then!:j0 -
Did anyone else have bovril spread on bread and butter? It's a family favourite but other people seem aghast and see it as a 'poor' alternative to marmite. (Didn't come across that until I was an adult, yuck!)
We were always told that it was 'feeding' like beef tea I suppose...The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
