I think you might be right about some part being faulty. It still works but just that smell when you stick your nose up to the rear grill area.

I'm sure my own PC doesn't smell like that!

Just to update. My son has just taken out the psu to temporarily replace it with his old one - only 350w so he'll need to hook up a bit less meanwhile.

I was just looking at the unit. Looking through the internal grill, I can see a coil-shaped piece of wiring. One side of it is blackish, the other being a bright golden colour.

    Could this be the cause?

This isnt likely to help you but the last time I smelt smoke from my PC I ended up having to replace more than half of the components.

Fortunately it's only the psu that's affected. The old one works perfectly with the new sysytem, although a couple of hard drives less hooked up at the moment.

Just waiting on an RMA now.

As he built the PC taking it back to the shop could be hard.

    What are you thinking.

If our PSU goes, we buy a new one, if it's faulty we take it back and get one that works.

So what if you installed it yourself.

So it's not hard, take PSU and receipt, tell them it's cream crackered and they will have to offer a repair, a refund or a replacement.

They buy them for about £3 each and sell them to you from as little as £20, so it's no skin off their nose.

The person I was responding to seemed to assume that the PC was bought from a shop, or all the components came from a retail shop. From what I read....it appeared as if all the components were bought seperately. Therefore, it would be hard to take the box back to a shop and simply say "it smell of burning please fix it".
