My son built his new PC 2/3 weeks ago. He's just noticed a burning smell coming from the PSU(500w). It's very hot to touch,
Is there anything this could be other than a faulty PSU?

As he built the PC taking it back to the shop could be hard. As a first step I'd turn the whole thing off and have a look inside the box. If anything has gone inside it should be pretty obvious.
If it isn't I'd try and get my hands on another PSU....hook it up temporarily and see what happens. If things go okay with the temp PSU then you know what the problem is.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

Nothing obvious gone inside the case.
Only spare PSU we have is a 350w - bit too low for the stuff he's got in it.0 -
Try get a refund. When you say it gets hot do u mean its hot enough to burn the skin?0

No, no hot enough to burn skin.
It was bought from ebuyer so it will have to be returned to there.0 -
This may sound silly but is the fan actually running inside the PSU?0

The PSU has two fans. The exhaust fan is meant to only come on when the PSU reaches a certain temperature. We turned the PC off for about half an hour. Within 5 minutes of turning it on the exhaust fan came on. Can't tell what the other fan is doing - this is meant to be on all the time.0

I would say the fans arnt workin or one of the circuits is misplaced or touchin summat else fryin it up. One of the wiring coils could be faulty causing excess heat. Get a new one ASAP.:rotfl: :j :T :bdaycake: :xmastree: :bdaycake: :T :j :rotfl:0
