I'm off to buy a wireless modem today and the choice is between a netgear one or a belkin one. All the main stores sell both, but which one is the better make and why.

I prefer netgear, but it depends on what features you want.
Wireless e.g B/G and if you need N.
10/100Mbs or 1000Mbs lan speed for ethernet connections.0 -
Personally a big netgear fan. Try looking here
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/
Has a wealth of information and indepth reviews on all major routers as well as comparison charts.0 -
Depends on what features etc you want. If you just want a basic router either one will provide a good model but if you want to do anything more complicated you will need to look at the features0

if you use a ds or wii , theres more chance of it working with netgear0

Netgear 4 me - currently have a DGN2000 and find it very good.
Not to mention the excellent unofficial firmware replacement you can get from the DGTeam

Just waiting for this router to arrive is the unofficial firmware much better ?0 -
After years of Belkin and all with problems I switched to Netgear and not looked back. My best pal was the same and he followed my lead and is amazed all his poor connection problems have gone.
I did research this forum before I bought and usually came back to the Netgear.0 -
It gives you much more control, with the ability to tweak loads more settings. Depends how techie you are with routers - a bit beyond me at times - lol
However I found that I was getting drop outs (crap line from BT) and I was able to tweak this firmware to get a connection that stayed connected rather than dropping out every 15 mins.
I would suggest you stay with the official unless you are a tweak-freak or are having problems with the supplied firmware - it good just to know there is a choice just in case.0 -
Where i stay i get really slow speeds, So i got my netgear and installed firmware from DGteam. I changed my SNR from 100% to 40% gives me like Meg and half faster.0
