  • Sorry shoptillyoudrop - I'm probably mistaken. I'm sure the other helpful people on this board will be able to help you sort your computer out.

AdAware, MalwareBytes, SpyBot - Search and Destroy are AntiSpyware Programs.

Avast,AVG, Norton Antivirus, McAfee Antivirus are Antivirus Programs.

Neither will conflict with the other (One Antispyware and one antivirus) as noted by espresso! Most Antispyware software programs do not have real time scanning unless you pay for them, so having two antispyware programs on the same system will not cause any conflictions at all. On the other hand, having two antivirus programs will cause conflictions as antivirus programs usually scans in real time.

    Am I right espresso? :P
  • I'm not that familliar with Ad Aware so I could be wrong but having googled it it sounds like it's designed to do the same sort of thing as AVG - I have always been told that having 2 antivirus programs running at the same time isn't a good idea but I'm no technical expert! Personally, I use Avast antivirus - I used to have AVG but I find Avast is less resource intensive (AVG started to make things run really slowly for me). That runs all the time, and I have windows firewall turned on too. I have Malware Bytes installed on my computer and run that from time to time to do a quick check that there's nothing hidden on my computer that shouldn't be. That seems to be all my computer needs :)

I have winodws firewall too.. Does Malware Bytes remove things automatically? Is it best to keep Avg instead of having ad-aware?

  • spysect is correct and I was wrong, sorry. They seem to be 2 different bits of kit so shouldn't be causing a conflict after all, so please ignore what I said about getting rid of one of them. Hopefully spysect and espresso will be able to help you sort things out though :)

For a system is best to have:

    One Firewall (Windows Firewall)
One Antivirus Program (AVG, Avast, etc.)
At least One AntiSpyware Program (AdAware, SpyBot, MalwareBytes)

Note that Antivirus Programs have real-time scanners for virus/trojans!
Free Versions of AntiSpyware Programs do not have not real-time scanners for spyware!

Thanks spysect :) I should have read more about Ad Aware before posting! I just saw "antivirus" and thought it would conflict - I'll make a mental note to read more before speaking next time ;)

Read this article here which explains more about various free anti-virus, spyware programs. Different people will say that the one that they use is better but you should choose what suits you. Only one resident anti-virus program should be installed and running but on-line scanners can also be used if you wish. Spybot S&D will protect your machine if you regularly manually update and immunize it once a week.

So i should just keep avg and ad aware? or is malwarebytes a better option instead of ad aware? Thanks for your help :D
