A little help please.

Hi.

I currently have ad-aware & AVG- free 8.5...

Do these even work properly? The reason I'm asking is because everytime i run ad-aware, i always have the same three files appear at the end of my scan... i always remove them. Also ad-aware says i need to update to the new version & i downloaded it (which took a loooong time!) Then it appears i still have the old version . Im not very technical :o

Also my laptop runs slower than it did a while back. I dont have many things stored on here apart from pictures.

How can i make my laptop run better?

Also is it worth getting different security? (These don't seem any good!)

Would appreciate some help

Oh it's best to mention i want free security but good security :)

Thanks for reading :)

Have you tried the following software?

MalwareBytes (malwarebytes.org) (Malware and Spyware Scanner)
    CCleaner (ccleaner.com) (Cleaner)
SpyBot - Search and Destroy (spybot.info) (Spyware Scanner)

I used the above as well as Avast Antivirus and HiJack This, which kept the laptop running at peak condition! :) So give those a go!

Or try downloading the latest version from the Ad-Aware Website, uninstall the old version and reinstall the new version.

Many people seem to have given up on Ad-Aware and Spybot-Search & Destroy in favour of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

With regard to antivirus programs, AVG 9.0 gets good reviews in this month's PC Pro magazine, but many people are quite rude about it. Avast and Avira AntiVir often get a good comment.

I personally would ditch ad aware and avg but there will be others who would disagree with me, id replace the 2 with avast and malwarebytes(is this a suitable replacement for ad aware)
  • I think that maybe the problem is that you're running 2 things that are trying to do the same job - in terms of antivirus software this usually doesn't work too well. I would recommend uninstalling either AVG or Ad Aware and then just seeing if the one that's left functions properly. Maybe try uninstalling both and then re-installing just the one you want to keep.

wouldnt the 2 above counteract 1 another

I always thought, Spyware Scanners wouldn't conflict with each other, as they are not scanning live.

I would remove Ad-Aware, but that is my opinion just because of the amount of bloatware they have added to it nowadays and go for SpyBot and MalwareBytes.

But on my current system (or systems :P) that is what they have on each of them, set to automatically scan every month. Seems to made the system run a lot smoother nowadays.
  • I'm not that familliar with Ad Aware so I could be wrong but having googled it it sounds like it's designed to do the same sort of thing as AVG - I have always been told that having 2 antivirus programs running at the same time isn't a good idea but I'm no technical expert! Personally, I use Avast antivirus - I used to have AVG but I find Avast is less resource intensive (AVG started to make things run really slowly for me). That runs all the time, and I have windows firewall turned on too. I have Malware Bytes installed on my computer and run that from time to time to do a quick check that there's nothing hidden on my computer that shouldn't be. That seems to be all my computer needs :)

Please ignore what Rainbow_Kitty has told you about AVG conflicting with AdAware, it's rubbish!

Should i use them both or uninstall one of them?
