Not sure which OS your using but -

    To check your security

    In XP
Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections
Right click on your Wireless connection and select 'Properties'
Select the 'Wireless Networks' tab at the top
In the 'Preferred Networks' list select yor Network name and click 'Properties'.
You should now see details of your connection and any security enabled.

    In Vista
Click Start (Orb!) > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Centre
Next to your Wireless Network Connection click 'View Status'
In the window that opens click on 'Wireless Properties'
Click the 'Security' tab and you ou should now see details of any security enabled

No - (re-read his post) what I've shown you is your Wireless Security encryption - the bit between your router and any PCs and laptops etc connected to it wirelessly.

The ADSL bit is the wired connection (phone line) between your router and your ISP (AOL?) which requires a different username/password

    PC <----Wireless connection(with WPA/TKIP encryption & passphrase)---->Router<---Phone line(with username & password authentification)---->ISP/AOL

Hi, thanks, so I am encrypted with an 8 mixed digit key, which I presume esspresso suggests I change to 64 characters.from the site he gave? The steps he gave from aol are what they guided me through, they selected the key.To change the key, do I delete the asterisks then enter new 64 character in there? As I say, It will not let me view the key characters. Grateful for all your help

Hi, As the asterisks below TKIP were not done by me, I can only presume AOL did it, so I do not know what the key is, and if and how to change it, if nescesary? So I don,t know the strength of the key or passphrase?whatever is there.

when trying to access the router to change the passphrase it is recommended to use wired means just to prevent an outside person form seeing what your router login details are etc, the passpharse must be entered as its been set as eg if its lower case then lower case it has to be to access the network
Hi, I have been into router to try and change key which is notsecure enough to me. I would like the 64 bit, but I cannot get online even if I change it to my phone number only. Had e-mail from AOL with instructions , apart from key change and I am securish". Asked about WPA2, they recomend WPA, but if I want, change it.The key change is my priority, I just deleted the existing key, changed to phone number, just to try first before 64bit, but cannot get online wireless again until I revert back to original key. I reboot when I change key, not asked for new key.Bit confused , any help grateful

If you change the key in the router, you then must enter exactly the same key into any device that you wish to connect to the router. Change the key at one end of the link and it won't work, a bit like trying to use your old front door key after having a new lock fitted.

Hi espresso , how do I change my comp then. AOL say they dont recommend WPA2, if I want to change thats my problem. I thought I just changed the router key, it makes sense now, but stuck on how, not happy with the key AOL put on when they configured router for me on phone, I just followed instructions.

You can set up whatever wireless encryption that you want but the AOL script monkeys will only read what is on their script!

You said that after changing the key in the router, that you could not get back on-line. This is because the same key must be entered when you establish a wireless connection to the router. Once you have done this once, it will connect automatically.

I understand that, but when I change the key, then try to get online, I am not being asked for the new key.I only get cannot connect. I must be doing something wrong.I thought that I would be asked for new key to reconnect?I think I,m the Muppet
