central heating problem

hello - am hoping someone can help me.
im a novice at this home owner stuff and its been one thing after another since i bought this house so its a very steep learning curve!
i have a problem with my central heating. its an old house with an old boiler. it says on the boiler that its a potterton profile. my central heating seems to have a mind of its own. the thermostat is set to the highest and sometimes the heating comes on and its boiling and sometimes, it doesnt come on at all and its freezing.
just been sitting in a freezing house now for about an hour and the heating wouldnt come on. i went to kitchen and turned on the hot water tap and then turned the hot water on and now the heating seems to be working as the radiators are getting hot.
im thinking it isnt a problem with the thermostat (tho it is an old one and probably should be replaced). so is the problem my boiler?
i dont think the boiler has been serviced for a while - how much would that cost and who should i get to do it?
what should i do? help please? its freezing!
