Small cheap disposable things, without too many small parts. Ideally some new stuff as well as novelty value keeps them interested on holiday. How about:
bubbles and a variety of bubble blowers (maybe also a battery operated one)
party blowers
some new books
a game you can play with him - how about something like "Shark attack" from https://www.hawkinsbazaar.com
also don't forget his favourite toy from home in case he needs help to settle.0 -

From personal experience of travelling to Cornwall on a regular basis, often a 5 hour drive (hell!).
My advice would be set off an hour before nap time, little one will be happy to sit, and watch out of the window, then let him drift off naturally, traffic jams are a nightmare for waking them up, but if you don't encounter any keep going as long as your own body will allow, then let little one wake up naturally and don't look around to interract with them until winges start, then bring out your toys and snacks and that should take you to the end of the journey.
From my experience regular stops signals to them that the journey is over and protests occur when you try to get them back in the car seat.
Also if you are travelling when it isn't sleep time, again, dont turn round to interact until they winge, as soon as you look around they want stimulation, if you keep looking forwards they will often be happy just to watch out of the window and get lost in the experience.
Alternatively, travel when it is their bed time!

we live on the west coast of scotland and travel to ireland a few times a year. Our twins loved their little etch a sketch, lots of books and building blocks. The nesting ones are better for travelling. Nursery rhyme tapes/cds are good for the car but are liable to drive you insane. Your choice, screaming child or humptey dumpty on a loop.:D There are lots of lovely beaches up here so if the weather holds all you will need is a bucket and spade when you get here!!:rolleyes:0
