I usually use Asda or Waitrose bread flour, both very good. Last week tried Tesco's and not happy about it. The bread was not bad, but did not rise as high as with other brands flours, next time I tried it mixed with Waitrose Canadian - same result (same yeast and everything else), won't be buying it anymore.. Though it may be just this batch.. I remember trying it a couple of years ago and it was fine.. BTW, Lidl one is also good.

Just wondering, and not trying to be difficult honest MrsE :D do Aldi and/or Lidl carry bread flour? I've never looked, is it any good or cheaper?

Thanks for this, I always used to buy the best flour I could find for bread - but have since found that the cheapest does me just as well. Even did a 'taste test' a year or so ago and thought that the cheaper flour made a better loaf! Go figure . . .

Lidl's bread flour is 68p I remember being annoyed as I had just bought some from Sainsburys.
Getting there... A deal at a time. :T

IS that Asda price definitely right? I ask because I go to Asda like once a year, and went a week or so ago. I checked for SWB flour and remember thinking it was more expensive than Tesco at 68p (but I wouldn't bet money on me being right , I am more than likely wrong)

  • I've just been to Lidl, for strong white bread flour, and it was 68p but it said it was on 'special' the usual price being 75p. I remember fondly when it was 48p not so long ago. When they changed the packing a year or so ago, I think they changed the product. I was going to give up on it as my mixture began to seem a bit runny but then I adjusted the amount of water (from 310ml per 400g to 300ml per 400g) and it turned out as good as ever.
  • I'm a big fan of Allinson's Very Strong - I've never had bad results from it.
The price does vary a lot - it often seems to be on 'special offer' in Te$co particularly.
but I usually pay somewhere around £1 for 1.5kg from which I get 3 large loaves.
I consider that pretty good value for money.

I add milk powder to my bread mixes, I find Te$co Value stuff cheap as chips and as good as anything else.

I scrounge free yeast from whichever supermarket bakery counter I'm nearest at the time.
    I've not been refused yet.
    Gus.

Great idea, but not seen any bread flour on the shelf in local shop this week. Sold out.

I also either use normal flour or a blend of the 2, so it means I can make it without the bread flour.
One day I might be more organised...........

Would the old style board guides like to use this list to add as a sticky or if not a front page sticky, to stick it in the front of the most pop bread making thread?

I was going to move this to the Shopping Board, but as you asked so nicely, I'll add it to the breadmaking thread, once it drops from the front page of OS :D

Coop white bread flour is £1.19 for 1.5kg- much more expensive than Lidl or Tesco (the only two other supermarkets we have) but as Tesco had none, and I could not be bothered going into Lidl for one thing I got some!
Works out at approx 7.9p per 100g.
Not tried it yet but Coop things are generally very good quality.
I also make bread/rolls with half and half bread/plain flour.
I have used Tesco, Lidl, Allinsons, Hovis (bread mix) in the past and noticed no real difference between them. I don't tend to make 100% wholemeal or brown loaves, but a mix with white or pure white.
    hth.
(Coop also sells the Doves Farm Organic (?) stuff, which was over £2 for I think a 1.5kg (maybe 1kg) bag, hence I left that on the shelf lol).
