Recycling Batteries (Merged)

  • I am swapping over to rechargeable batteries, though they are expensive!

AA Size rechargeable batteries are 4 for £1 at poundland - the same price as the regular batteries. And they work OK too ;)

Just a shame they don't do any other sizes

As per page 91 of Sainsburys Fresh Ideas magazine.....

'Sainsburys has launched a unique scheme, offering customers a Freepost battery recycling service. This is expected to save 2,500 tonnes of batteries going to landfill every year. The Freepost envelopes, available in store, allow you to send off old batteries, moblie phones and inkjet printer cartridges, which will then be re-used or recycled. What's more Comic Relief will receive £3 for every mobile phone recycled and 50p for every inkjet printer recycled.'

In the last sentence I think they meant 'inkjet printer cartridge' not 'inkjet printer' unless they have very big envelopes !

Anyway it's the recycling of the batteries that really took my eye as I have already found a home for the rest.

    Hope this helps

Has anyone actually seen the envelopes around in store?

I phoned the Northfield branch today and was told the envelopes are at the customer services/information desk.
  • Thanks for the info, but luckily our council collect them for recycling.

    good reminder, though.
Remember to tape up the ends to stop them touching in the envelope.;)

Hi, I use rechargeables wherever possible but inevitably I have the occasional small household battery or two to get rid of. I also have an obsolete remote control from a toy, which states the whole unit with inbuilt battery needs to be properly disposed of.

I know this isn't strictly a moneysaving issue, but I can't seem to get a definitive answer about how to dispose of them properly.

I have been told there are collection points in supermarkets and I have asked in my local ones but I just get blank looks!

My council's website only says they "aim" to separate batteries from household waste in the future.

I've seen proper collection points in other countries, but I don't think taking my dead batteries with me when I travel is a good solution!

    Your advice appreciated. Thank you.
