When I used to get toncilitis, I found MacDonalds milk shakes & frjjie (sp?) milkshakes really helped.
Any of those ready made milk shakes work well, nice & chilled.
They seem to coat your red throat & stick to the sides as they go down & their coldness is soothing.
Lots of people say you shouldn't have dairy when you're ill but I only ever have choc milkshake when I'm poorly! lol I might stick my lidl milkshake in the freezer for a bit! :T0 -
A good hot curry works wonders too, hot as you can take it!Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0

I work with an ENT surgeon, he says tonsilectomies cure tonsilitus but you can still get sore throats!
(I still do 18 years after having mine!)
I find soluble paracetamol helpful, my mum swears by honey.
The main thing, as said earlier is to keep sipping fluid.0 -
I found all swallowing, especially saliva a real trauma too. I used to like plain bread soldiers dipped into a soft boiled egg, round about day three when I was so hank marvin.
The last bout I had I went for an emergency docs appt at 11.30, and was in such a fever I was still sitting in the waiting room after the cleaners had finished:eek:
The last man out was a doc and he saw me, got the usual ...yes just pee your work off four times a year, antibiotics won't solve it, be a (wo)man and deal with it
When I couldn't stop the tears and said....!!!!!! why can't my work's health scheme sort this....well his ears pricked up and the following Tuesday I was in a bupa hospital phoning my mum after the op and ordering food. Sadly the four course gourmet dinnere menu (true:eek:) was beyond me.....I requested apple juice (oh so very thirsty).
Never ever again, so nippy....it's put me off apple juice for the last 18 years:rotfl:
The operation and my recovery were a walk in the park compared to a bad bout, and the Doc as much as admitted an NHS removal is as rare as hen's teeth.....for economic reasonsNot just a sucker for sweeties..:o0 -

I had the chef sitting in my room asking what I would like:rotfl:
I opted for an omelet:D A soft plain one:D0 -

It was a total revelation TBH....how the other half live ..PHI (company paid us all off years ago and ran back to the states so sadly no more).
I'm just a bitthat I put up with it for three years while the health cover was in place.....young n stoopid:rotfl:

I took myself off to the doctor who REFUSED to give me anything. I explained that I was setting off on my hols the next day and did not fancy two weeks with a strep throat. He wouldn't back down and maintained that antibiotics do not work on sore throats in much the same way they do not work for colds. So, I had a miserable holiday unable to eat - and even drinking was very painful.
95% of sore throats and tonsillitis is caused by viruses.0 -
My practice nurse said that the best things to drink are warm sugary ones. Hot choc during the day and warm Ribena in a flask at night. Before anyone comments, I am sure that toothbrushing is important too!0

I am also a recurring sufferer from tonsillitis.
My best advice for the pain is to gargle with a soluble aspirin. Don't swallow it, just give it a good swish round your mouth and gargle away. Make a tune while you do it if it cheers you up
And same advice as everyone else - keep drinking. Fluids are your friends.
The antibiotics should kick in by tonight and you'll start feeling better.
Make sure you finish the whole course though!0 -

After years of trouble, I was sent for a tonsillectomy about 4 years ago. I nearly didn't wake up because the surgeon kept finding infected tissue, no matter how deep he went, and every time he tried to finish, he found more and more scar tissue.
He said I had obviously had a thing called a quinsy (?) - an abscess - about 5 times in the last 12 months and why had I not gone to the GP's about this?
Well, it was the same GP that I had gone to desperate for help about 5 times to be told that every one has a sort throat with tonsillitis and as I refused to take antibiotics (I am allergic to penicillin - as in anaphylactic shock - and I wasn't refusing everything point blank, just penicillin) I had to put up with it.
Changed GP after that.
I had a Quinsy last year as a complication of my Tonsillitis. It was the most painful thing I have ever had to endure. I couldn't swallow so I couldn't eat or drink anything.
I had antibiotics for the Tonsillitis but they didn't really hit it, to be honest. I went back to the doctor, she took one look at my throat and told me I would have to be admitted to hospital that day to have fluids and antibiotics by IV.
It didn't help that when OH came to visit me, he had been reading up about people who had died from Quinsy complications.
I was meant to be in hospital for 24 hours but was in for 48. Tbh the antibiotics took a while to work in hospital too.
I was so happy when I was out and could drink again.
I never want another Quinsy as long as I live.2019 Wins
