I *think* you can still get them, it'd be worth asking if you can get to Boots or a Chemist. Decquacaine (sp?) lozenges are good too - you have to ask for them at the counter but again, they do help.
Another vote from me for Dequacaine lozenges! (the spray is VERY good too and lasts quite a while for about £5 a bottle)
Just dont eat/drink anything too hot for half an hour after using it, (the phamacist should warn you but just in case) it really numbs your throat (like a dentist injection)
I used to suffer from tonsillitis a lot while I was at school and only found out about Dequacaine a few years ago, always got a pack in the drawer just in case now.Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -
I've also found gargling with a strong mouthwash helps stop it (as above, I've learnt to notice the first signs of it) gargling with lysterine two or three times a day helps to stop it progressing any further.
I now gargle with mouthwash a couple of times a week and dont want to talk it up but havent had tonsillitis for about 18 months (used to get it two or three times a year)Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -
Hi
I'm interested to hear that your doctor prescribed antibiotics. When I was younger, I suffered a lot with sore throats and the doctor always gave me antibiotics which worked wonderfully. Fast forward many years and I developed a severe sore throat and I knew from experience that it was unlikely to go away without prescribed medication. I took myself off to the doctor who REFUSED to give me anything. I explained that I was setting off on my hols the next day and did not fancy two weeks with a strep throat. He wouldn't back down and maintained that antibiotics do not work on sore throats in much the same way they do not work for colds. So, I had a miserable holiday unable to eat - and even drinking was very painful.0 -
Hi there,
Sorry you are unwell. I always take Chloraseptic throat spray which you can buy over the counter - I don't know if this is the same as "Dequacaine" but on my bottle it says it is Benzocaine. I think also maybe keep the room moist - hot steam?
I resort to homeopathic remedies when I get very bad colds or flu and they work for me - but I am lucky enough to be able to get to the Weleda pharmacy and they give me the appropriate drops to put in water.
Hope you feel better soon,
Sparkly0 -
I have some of those dequadine (sp) things but I have never found them to help
I also know when they are coming but having at least one very painful one per month I feel like they are something I will never be free of even without tonsils:mad:, when I spoke to the gp he just said some people get them all the time - very reassuring:rolleyes:
I second the drinking lots of fluids and if you can manage it warm honey is great for coating your throat.0 -

Does anyone have any good throat soothing tips for me? I'm at my wits end.
When I used to get toncilitis, I found MacDonalds milk shakes & frjjie (sp?) milkshakes really helped.
Any of those ready made milk shakes work well, nice & chilled.
They seem to coat your red throat & stick to the sides as they go down & their coldness is soothing.0 -
I think the Dequacaine and Chloraseptic sprays are similar, I'm not sure its benzocaine but they have similar effects.
As far as the lozenges go there are Dequacaine AND Dequadin, I've only ever tried DequacaineMissing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -

I've recently changed dr's so I don't know if that has something to do with it but I used to get tonsillitis quite a lot and have only been prescribed antibiotics maybe twice. If you have cold like symptoms alongside the swollen tonsils it's usually a viral infection so antibiotics won't help you. If you have swollen glands, a painful neck, no cold/flu and pus on your tonsils it's usually a bacterial infection so antibiotics may help.
I haven't had tonsillitis in about a year but used to have it 5 + times a year and was always told they can't give me anything and I should just "ride it out"I only go to the drs when I can't cope with my throat so it's not what you want to hear!
