Defective iPhone - Can I get it replaced?

Firstly, I think my iPhone is great - please don't think this is a dig at them!
Anyway, I entered into a 18 iPhone 3G contract with O2 in October 2008 (which will expire around March/April this year). I bought it from the Carphone Warehouse.
The past week or so, the device has developed a problem - it can't connect to wireless networks.
After a chat with someone on the end of the Apple hotline (who was very helpful, and suggested numerous procedures to get it to work., but to no avail), it was concluded that it is due to defective hardware, and the device would need to be changed. The warranty lasts 12 months, and has obviously expired. The chap said I could fork out £146.13 of my own money to replace the handset, but I don't think this is a particularly good idea.
So, I would like to know what else I can do to get my iPhone fixed or replaced. I've been reading around (in particular the Sales of Goods Act), and noticed that there is a clause which dictates the durability of the goods in question.
Am I in a position to complain and it would be fair to suggest that a phone sold with an 18 month contract should last for the duration of 18 months? And who would I complain to? The Carphone Warehouse? O2? Apple?
Anyway, thanks for your help!

I have a feeling that this wifi problem happened after a software update....just update software again see what happens.
Also if its just a wifi problem, stick it on ebay you will get good money for it. Put a bit of money on top and get a 3gs. Also it seems to me like you are due for upgrade...as you can upgrade a month early and you are in month 17 right now. If thats the case get yourselfs a 3gs and sell the 3g on ebay. You should make a good amount of money for it even with the wifi issue.
It will probably sell for as much as the ones without the wifi problem.

Book a Genius appointment at an Apple Store, service will be head and shoulders above anything O2 or CPW can offer.0
