I find that job centres are fairly poor for netting jobs for specific skillsets on their databases. They get a lot of generic jobs down there on their system but for something like what I needed e.g. Design there is really almost nil. The reason being most companies in certain sectors don't bother sending out the net as far as the Job Seeker offices. They rely on catching new graduates (so ask their local unis/colleges), posting on online recruitment/job boards, recruitment agencies etc. So you could try one of the many online job boards. I understand it must be difficult though with an area like yours with low landmass and low access to major cities but hopefully there is something on one of them that is within reach. Alternatively if you look up freelancing only rather than permanent/in-house jobs on such boards you may find jobs that don't require you to come to the office to work and can be done via computer/email/phone etc. Here's one article that lists a few job boards, but I'm sure there's many articles out there that list some of the top ones:

    http://jobsearchtech.about.com/od/jobsearchtools/tp/topjobboards.htm

As a chef previously you could consider going round local catering companies and seeing if they need any help. Or cook/bake stuff and sell foodstuffs via local market or the net etc. (may need a small clearance from food association).

For admin work you could do some typing work or virtual assistant work. If you do a search on the Up Your Income section for typing or virtual assistant you should find some topics relating to these areas. Or call/email/visit local businesses and ask if they require any such services.

For IT experience it depends what area of expertise or what exactly you were doing I guess since its a big field. But there should be some way to make use of it via the net outside of your local area. There are some freelance job boards like odesk, freelancer, getafreelancer, guru, elance, rentacoder etc. But they are high in competition which makes them a pain to get a reasonable paying project out of. Worth a shot to dabble in though if you have any of the skills required for such jobs posted on them and don't wish to do the whole full freelancing gig of setting up a website, advertising yourself etc.

Besides, I created this thread to see if anyone had any ideas on making some cash, not to be bombarded with the way to apply for jobs - I am already WELL practised in this! I've had 6 months of practise thanks!

The best way to find that is to read this forum rather than post and ask people to tell you.
See what suits you and post on the individual threads...

I did read through several pages of the up your income section (I haven't quite finished checking it) and most of what I found required an inital cash outlay - I don't have the money for this.

What really gets my goat though is that the government expects me to live off literally nothing. And yet if I popped out a baby I would get every benefit under the sun no doubt! Those who want to work are rarely helped and yet there are these perfectly capable people who manage to stay on the scrounge for years simply because they are too lazy to work. Where's the justice?

The honest working single person doesn't get a scrap even if you don't very much!

Most the party planning ones require an outlay to begin with.
Other schemes it will take several months to start earning money, like cashback, surveys etc...as you build up enough to meet the first withdrawals after then the money flows in...it isn't hard to earn £100/200 a month though.
  • Assumptions abound.
Good luck with finding work and with gaining some income meantime HannahIOW.

Sorry I don't think its anyones intention to seem like we're 'badgering'. Apologies if any of it seemed offensive in any way. I only suggested certain avenues of job searches because it can be difficult cutting through the thick online. As you say even with this forum section alone you can go back through things page by page and still not really get down to the gems. Hopefully at least some of the links though may be of use. Some of the lesser known ones with less competition on them can be overlooked and also by changing your search to 'freelance jobs' rather than 'fulltime jobs' means more 'work from home' type employment that may yield more results as then it won't matter if they are based at the mainland/USA/wherever. If you land a freelance job from home working via the net just register as self-employed and you're on your way. And you can quit at anytime then when you find a local job. Best of luck with the continued hunt. Trouble with the net is that we can't really get the full picture without the full story, so we can only but try to help with limited info.

Doing a forum Search of just this one section with keywords like "daily clicks", "cashback", "reviews", "typing", "food" etc. should help with cutting through the wheat so to speak. There's a lot of info here but its rather broken up and some of the threads that try to compile things together seem to get buried back 10 pages or more.

I had a scour and here's a few things that may relate to stuff you could try with your skills. As well as the non-skilled stuff that could supplement them.

I know how tough it can be. My ex was out of work for 6 months, worked just under six and had a major motorcycle crash which she had to leave work because of. She apparently is now no longer eligable for benefits and living off nothing.

All you can do is keep slogging on with the job hunt & apply for everything you can. Is it perhaps worth considering Portsmouth etc and getting the ferry over?

In terms of quick wins with no outlay - there are VERY few out there, else everyone would be doing them! How about putting a card in a newsagents window offering to do ironing etc for the moment or a snow shovelling service :rotfl:

Actually, keep an eye on newsagent windows - I've found jobs that way in the past

Whatever happens, keep your head up and something WILL happen.
Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male:

  • maybe you should pop out a child then seeing as you will then be entitled to every benefit under the sun!!

    really. some people.
"it's better than a poke in the eye with a pointy stick" - my dad, regularly throughout my childhood when I complained about something being too small/not perfect/not tasty/not what I wanted. he was right every time. :D
