why has my premium gone up 100% ???

Hi all
im new here but have registered as i need some advice...

I have 1984 porsche 944 with an estimated value of at most £1500. For the past 3 years I have paid approximately £360, £320, £320 for fully comp insurance. Last year the binmen reversed into my car while it was parked in the street and they accepted responsibility. Since the official repair bill was over £2000, their insurance company agreed to pay me out the value of the car which was in their eyes £1400 if they took the car for scrap, or £1100 and told me I could keep the car. I opted to keep the car and had the damage fixed myself at a cost of £800. They assured me it would not impact upon my 7 years of no claims bonus (Ive never had a claim or points).

However now when I come to renew my policy the cheapest I can find anywhere is £679 for 3rd party, which I am assumiing must have something to do with the claim made or the fact that the car was written off by the insurers? Is there any way for me to check whether me or the car have been listed as 'having made a claim' even though I have done nothing wrong? I think this is disgraceful as I only use the car maybe once a month and now I am faced with selling it as I refuse to pay so much after years of careful driving in order to bring my insurance down. Is there anything I can do about it?

Would appreciate any thoughts on this
Cheers Marc

Your bonus has not been affected.
When you apply for quotes you should be asked whether you have suffered any accident, loss or claim. You should be saying yes (even though it's non fault).

There isn't anything you can do about it (except shop around or chose alternative transport).

Even though the accident was not your fault, you are now a higher risk according to the insurers.

Perhaps others can explain it better than me, because I agree it's not logical and I see your point of view.

However you are now seen as a higher risk and there is nothing you can do about it.

If you find the prices unaccpetable then you need to rething your transprt situation.
If you only use it once per month, then why don't you get a taxi or if the journey is long then get a hire car. I can hire a car for £30 a day including insurance with no excess, so only other cost is fuel.
It's got to be cheaper to find an alternative.

If you do then please keep your renewal notice that says 7 years NCB.
You might want to use it at some time in the next 2 years (after which it expires if unused).

Why advise someone to buy a new car if they drive once a month?

The annual costs of tax, mot, insurance, serviceing, repairs, breakdown cover etc. means that you are far better off getting a taxi, hire car or car share if no public transport is available.

thanks lisyloo - what a crappy system eh - i really hate insurance its like a corporate tax which the government just allow to happen- it really p155es me off especially after driving in australia where the government cover everyone for 3rd party insurance for a flat annual rate... :(

JS - believe me when you have put 3 years of hard work into looking after something which you love (and is a classic car - in my eyes!) then no you do not wanna just throw it away because some superficial nob like you says so! so GFYS

What you should do is buy a classic car policy with an annual mileage limit. Would be much cheaper. The downside is that you would almost certainly not then get driving other cars cover and would be limited social, domestic and pleasure use only.

How is insurance akin to a corporate tax? It is nonsensical to compare our system of insurance with Australia as the requirements of insurance by law are different, the law of tort is different and Australia is on the whole much more rural than the UK.

Yes, sure I understand if you love yor car.
Ultimately it's your decision whether it's worth paying the insurance for your hobby.
You don't need to tell me about that because I have a Ducati motorbike which is fairly high on the "heart versus head" scale and the complete opposite of a sensible financial decision.

I don't have a car personally, but if I need to hire one I get it here at a local company. About £30 for a day.

    http://www.normanewebb.com/car-hire-chippenham.html#prices

It has no excess (something I'm careful to check), so only other cost is fuel (and getting there and back).

I'm going to try and alternate my NCD with my spouse so that we get to keep two going, but that will go out the window if there is a priec difference.

I would second that advice - I have a fairly high performance older car (in excellent condition) that I use occasionally when weather permits (not at the minute then...:p) and pay approx £150 per year for a fully comp classic car policy with agreed valuation and mileage limited to 3000 per year. Suits me perfectly.
