The word VENT being in the title of the forum!

Calm down, calm down. It was meant lightly but you've clearly taken it far too seriously.

And for having only 12 posts, and as far as I can see no dealing with voiceofreason, how can you know that they are 'wrong as usual'?

Wrong as usual voiceofreason - Nope, Raksha didn't claim to be a manager choosing to work from home in bad weather while the staff stuggled in to the office.

Who said I couldn't do my job perfectly well from home, do you, or have you ever spent much time in the workplace? Doesn't sound like it or you'd be aware that the decision on whether or not I'm allowed to do that is made by my MANAGER. We all turned up at work to find his decision was that he was working from home because of inclement weather, any of us who hadn't made it in would have to either make up the lost time or take annual leave.

Sauce for the goose wasn't also sauce for the gander.

FYI I am the Office Manager. Your original post implied you were 'expected to drive/walk/bus to work in order to deliver a service' - we don't know what that service is - it may be that you are in direct face to face contact with members of the public - you haven't told us. A manager is often quite capable of delivery a satisfactory service remotely, so why shouldn't the decision be made to keep as many vehicles off the roads as possible?

Sounds to me like you need to address this with your manager at your next review, and maybe ask for some help with anger management ;)
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Maybe there won't be a next review if the manager is at home reading what the workers are busying themselves with "at the Office".

Sounds like a bit of jealousy to me. If they are able to do the job from home why not, their managers must be happy with that arrangement. Maybe you should up your game to become a manager , and maybe you could stay at home too!
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

My husband had to work from home on Tuesday as the snow was so bad, and having a broken arm he wouldn't risk driving with one hand 40 miles. The phone never stopped ringing and his computer was working overtime. He gave permission for anybody who had difficulties getting home to go home at 2pm (some took advantage), he didn't stop working at 2pm. Wednesday he had to get a taxi, stay overnight Weds & Thurs and get a taxi home again today. So all bosses aren't the same. Oh, and he got a phone call on Tues to say the cleaner couldn't get home so he told them to get her a taxi and the company would pay.

I love this section, I can just imagine people shaking their fists at the screen and swearing loudly when they read the replies to their posts (as I have in the past :D)
    All I can say is......

Can you feel the love in the room:smileyhea
The advice I give on here is based on my many years in the preservation industry. I choose to remain anonymous, I have no desire to get work from anyone. No one can give 100% accurate advice on a forum if I get it wrong you'll get a sincere apology and that's all:D

I worked out in all weathers, service engineer on call at all hours driving night and day for over 25 years(ho ho not on one shift...lol).

My job now enables me to work from home when I want to(although not a manager) and it certainly beats driving around in this snow.

And don't try to tell us you wouldn't work from home if you could..even if some other poor shmuck had to get to the work place,eh?

I am a manager in a local authority team.

I have not yet missed a single day at the office, despite most journeys taking over an hour when they usually take 15 minutes.

My staff, on the other hand, well several of them have not come in and I have allowed them to work from home if it's safer.

We're not all the same you know!!

    Almost ditto except the employment!

Out of my entire team I have by far the furthest journey - 35 miles each way! As I've had meetings arranged, I've made it in on all days, when my staff 5 miles away didn't!

My terms of employment allow me to work from home if I have suitable tasks that can be done ... believe me, far more hours and outcome happen from home than the office as there is many fewer distractions etc.

I think I'll engage smug mode right about now.

Senior Manager in the online gaming/social networking industry here....I work from home permanently.

Boy that 30 second commute down the stairs in this weather is a killer I can tell you :D
