With tens of thousands of homes having had subsidised Cavity Wall and Loft Insulation, and thousands of high efficiency condensing boilers installed across the nation - then how come we've just used a 1 day record amount of gas? Something's not working out.

check the thread regarding keeping gas on 24/7 and you might have the answer :)

Amazing the no. of people around who still expect their houses to be warm enough in this weather to wear little more than t-shirts etc indoors, as though it was summer. CH will allow you to do that, but you'll pay the penalty when your gas bill arrives.

1983 was mild. I think you mean 81-82.
I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

Simple really. In 1983 there were lots less homes with Central Heating, and people were not so soft. In 2010, we've nearly all got CH, and have forgotten that we can put more clothes on, and as a result we use loads more gas then we did 25+ years ago. I think there were quite a few less homes in 1983 too!

I go with this one Flearoy, we've all gone soft and use more. My neighbour got a new boiler; they leave it on 24/7 all year and live in a perpetual tropical summer.

When the wind whips up over the weekend that'll send consumption rocketing as that's what really chills a house.

agree with you, I made the point as well that people will be complaining in a few months when their direct debits shoot up.
