Record Gas Consumption - How Come?

With tens of thousands of homes having had subsidised Cavity Wall and Loft Insulation, and thousands of high efficiency condensing boilers installed across the nation - then how come we've just used a 1 day record amount of gas? Something's not working out.

Lots of people dont can't get grants or have solid walls also it will take a long time to get around everyone even if they were qualified to get something

The record amount of gas is also a result of the very cold temperatures we are getting

population is bigger / number of households maybe?
Gas central heating is more common than it was with the last big freeze (60's?).
More power stations now burn gas than they did historically (over coal)?

Don't know if any of the above is valid - but don't they all sound plausible?

Coldest temperature since 1983 iirc, and people using their heating systems in an inefficient way perhaps.
It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.

I see what you're saying, but we need to remember that some parts of the country are extremely cold. I'm in Cheshire, near Woodford. The temperature overnight last night was -17C. Same the night before. This morning at 10am it was a balmy -15C. even with all the insulation and cavity wall work that's been done this past year or so, with outdoor temperatures like that, I think gas consumption is bound to be higher.

Simple really. In 1983 there were lots less homes with Central Heating, and people were not so soft. In 2010, we've nearly all got CH, and have forgotten that we can put more clothes on, and as a result we use loads more gas then we did 25+ years ago. I think there were quite a few less homes in 1983 too!
    Skip dipper and proud....

I always wear a thick jumper around house helps me able to turn dial on CH down a couple of degrees

Can I ask given the bad weather ask any elderly person/disabled who live next door to you if they are okay and or do they need anything, some people are too proud but many people dont go out now because of fear of falling. I do this myself to elderly couple next door, I dot mind doing it

I went to check on my own neighbours this morning as I hadn't seen anything of them for a couple of days. They're ok, just hibernating. They are worried sick about the cold & their bills, so I advised them to keep the curtains closed as long as possible to help hold the heat in. :A
