I don't think John Lewis are putting the VAT back up to 17.5% until February so okay to buy from there this month

Just c&p this from their website

    VAT changes 1 January 2010

We are dedicated to offering the best value on the high street, so we have delayed applying the VAT increase to the majority of our products until 1 February 2010. And, as we regularly check and match the prices of other high street shops, you can be confident in our prices, even during sales.
The prices of items in our Clearance will not be affected by the rise in VAT.

Hi, we have just bought a Toshiba 42XV635DB and its fantastic for the price - it has good reviews almost everywhere 4.5 - 5 stars. You can get it for £599 at Comet, Amazon or John Lewis where you will get the 5 year guarantee (John Lewis is online only I think) Dont know how much the 37" will be but obviously cheaper than our 42"

Samsung do not have a good reputation when it comes to TVs!

I am not prepared to argue about that statement, no doubt others on here will be along to disagree with you.:p

Personally I prefer Panasonic and am not a Samsung fan either but I know several people with them and they all rate them highly.

we bought from currys last week a 50 " samsung plasma for £599 and are more than happy with it. will take out an extended warranty for it at end of year and will add it to policy for rest of household goods.

I went to John Lewis yesterday and the one my flatmate liked the look of the most was the Sony Bravia but then thats thrown up a load more choices. There seems to be different ranges of TV, there is an 'S' range, and a 'V' and a 'W' range....more comparisons to be made I think.

If you possibly want the Freesat HD option, rather than waste your money on a Sky sub, you might look at the Samsung and Panasonic models that have built in Freesat tuners.
Personally I would hold off buying just now-you've just missed the lower VAT rate, and now with integrated HD around the corner there will be some new options to consider in the next couple of months.

But macman you've got me thinking that maybe we should wait. But its like anything else these days theres ALWAYS something new and better coming along...:o:rolleyes:

Depends what platform you intend to use. If Sky, no need to wait for Freeview HD.
If you get one with built in Freesat, that gives you an option to use Sky or Freesat.
Freeview HD is probably the next 'big thing' for now...until 3D TV comes along.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Just to emphasise that any TV you buy this week will definitely NOT contain a terrestrial Freeview-HD tuner. That means you'll have to buy a separate terrestrial Freeview-HD receiver if you want to watch terrestrial Freeview-HD in the future. (Not to be confused with "Freesat-HD" or "Sky-HD", which are both satellite broadcasts.)
