I think its all comes down to poor training and employing people who have no interest in there work .
John Lewis is a good example of knowledgeable staff who are not commissioned motivated and there sales figurers for Christmas showed the benefit.

I'm sorry for being slightly off topic, but this just made me fall off my chair laughing! I used to work for the John Lewis Partnership...are you aware of the partnership bonus? The bonus was held over our heads constantly to push better and better customer service out of us...everything was about working harder and harder. Everyone in the service industry is motivated this way...may not have been commission based but it was certainly motivated by finance!

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up; always try just one more time

Yes I am aware of the partnership scheme as I have friends who work for John Lewis and have worked for them for many years and they have nothing but praise for the company !! I did notice you did say better customer service and not increased sales

I know our local John Lewis especially in the technology department they are people who I have bought from for many years and you see the same faces year on year
You try walking into one of the electrical sheds to be honest I probably know more about the product than they do and if they do not know they will try to bluff there way through but as you have said it is straying of topic .
