  • Hi grateful, i agree, an aga will have to be turned down or off, then no cooking! just looking for a convenient and cheap way to heat the house and cook. seems people get their lpg at a better rate than me. need to shop around more!
  • checking with the environmental agency again today!
  • latest news, agency not at all happy! furthest i can get from the river is 3m....
  • now getting quotes to buy and install a wood burner.
    Stockton 5, £725.00
    Flue pipe, £59.00
    M.A Adapter £68.00
    Bird cage Cowl, £55.00
    10m Liner, £410.00
    Registration plate, £42.00
10 bags of Granular Insulation, £150.00
    total of £1,509.00
the installers want another £1,347.00 to install it.

    total of £2,856.00!!!"!

that can't be right can it?

think i need some more quotes! what is everyone else paying?
just so we are comparing apples for apples, i am removing my own fire surround (to sell on) and they will need to widen the hole by about 3-4 inches each side, and replace the lintel.

still seems nearly £3,000.00 is too much?
  • I think it might depend a bit on your location. Will they finish off the chimney breast properly by plastering if they are knocking a bigger hole?

Getting it done by a registered HETAS approved installer isn't cheap.

I should query the costings. The labour charge seems very high. Get a few more quotes.

I paid £2.2k for mine. Installation was £995 - but I know this was cheap compared to others in the area. To open the fire surround and make it look pretty was £380 and the oak lintel was another £40. I had this installed in January so the prices are recent. I have just come from oil heating and that used to cost me a fortune in the winter. Oil has gone rocketing in price. 4 years ago I could fill a tank for about £250, now it's nearer £550!!! I must admit I am so pleased to see the back of oil. The only good thing is that you were able to budget and adjust consumption accordingly. But now I do that with wood instead which is much cheaper in my opinion.
  • Hi Thanks all!
i will be getting another two quotes, got the names from 'Which' Local business.
don't mind paying a fare price, but i don't think i have one yet!
  • To be honest I doubt whether the savings on oil will be recoverable aginst the cost of switching! the tank, new boiler etc - you could be looking at £3-4000. Individual LPG Cylinders are expensive - why not explore getting a bulk tank installed? That way you can buy your lpg by the litre (much cheaper!)
