  • hello there!
Now very confused! I think it's a digibox-freeview thing I would like. Could just about stretch to a cheap one of these (saw one in Tescos for £28). Couldn't afford any extra dishes/Sky etc.

Thanks for all your suggestions - was wondering if I should borrow one off a mate - this might be a good idea just to see if it works.

Btw I'm in Camberwell, SE London.

I have used the post code SE5 7AA as an example, as it is in Camberwell. Try it with your post code and see what you get.

See here on the Digital TV Group website. It says that you can get all channels from Crystal Palace, the main transmitter that cover the London area. It says that it is 6km (4 miles) from the transmitter.

You say that you get a poor analogue reception; are you in some sort of dip? Look in the direction the aerial is pointing, does the ground go up in that direction or is there a large building in the way? Being that close I would have thought that any aerial would do.

Another thought; with you living so close to the transmitter, is it ghosting that is causing the problem? Perhaps the signal is reflecting off buildings because it is so strong.
  • Now that you mention it....if ghosting means the picture seems to have 2 of everything then that's what I've got mostly! However I've also got a bit of everything else (wobbling, jumping to B&W, dodgy sound).

I live pretty much at the bottom of Denmark Hill and I guess there are all manner of hills in between me and Crystal Palace (Herne/Forest/Sydenham etc). Also some people round here say it might be Kings College Hospital - I guess it's quite big.

I've got a digital radio which works just great. Is digi tv the same technology?

Looking at a map (see Multimap here), I would say that the hospital is prettymuch between you and the transmitter.

From what you've said, I would be given to thinking that you have a strong enough signal.

If it is ghosting that is the problem, then amplifying the signal will amplify the reflected signal aswell as the main signal.

Think of TV signals like sound waves. The ghosting is an echo bouncing off buildings and other objects. It is, in effect, a delayed sound, or in this case, a TV picture.

I'm no expert on aerials, so best to consult aerial rigger to clarify, but in this case, the ghosting is (presumably) coming from the same direction as the main signal, so an aerial that 'rejects' more signal from directions other than the intended one might not be of benefit. As I said, best to consult a rigger who knows the local area.

I understand that digital TV (Freeview) can handle some reflected signal so I suggest you borrow someone's digibox and try it.
