Rubbish Toshiba laptop needing repairing, advice please

I was bought a Toshiba L350-170 for christmas 2008.
I've had problem after problem with it and would like the opinion of somebody 'in the know' as to whether it is worth spending money on.
Within the first week the power supply blew up.
Since then, the socket you insert the power supply into sunk into the laptop casing.
The touchpad mouse no longer works.
2 out of the three usb's do not working, meaning once I've got the usb mouse in I can do nothing else.
The last three problem's have happened in the last couple of weeks.
I am just wondering if anyone can give me a rough idea of repair prices. I need a laptop that works for university. I'm wondering whether it may be a better idea to buy a new laptop, however annoying it is that I have only had this one a year.

Toshibas are pretty well made.
I don't see anywhere that you tried to get it repaired under warranty. Have you taken it back to to the place it was bought?0 -
It was a one year warranty, and the laptop was bought in Nov 2008. The power supply was replaced under warranty, but the other things have broken just outside the warranty period.
We always thought Toshiba was a good make to buy, but my Dad also has a Toshiba and has had the same problems with the USB's breaking.0 -
Posting from a Toshiba lappy here, bought middle 2008.
Not had any probs so far.
Have you tried booting with a live linux CD? Just to check whether the usb ports are really dead?Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

I have no idea what that means...
I think they are gonners though, with one of them, when you insert anything into it the usb port actually comes out on the end. If that makes sense... Technophobe here...
I had a Toshiba before this one, worked perfectly for a good 2/3 years untill the screen fell off  so I am surprised by how rubbish this one has been.0 -
so theres no chance being a student and beer you have ever been heavy handed at all?

Where did you buy from? Did you pay on credit card?
Under EU rules, new electrical items are required to last a minimum of 2 years, despite whatever 'warranty' is given.0 -

Now there's a stereotypical view of students...
It was a present, so I'll have to ask how it was paid for, I would think Debit card though, and I think it was bought from Comet.
I know i thought i would just ask lol not all students are like that just seems like youve bought a lemon this time i would use it to death and this time don't buy toshiba.
second thoughts have you tried ring toshiba direct as i know under european law they have to give 2 yrs warranty now (not that the retailers will tell you) i would try ringing them up see what they say but i suggest you will need that reciept. cant hurt see what they say no?
let us know how u get on!0 -

I just told my Dad (Parents bought me the laptop) that I was going to get in touch with Toshiba and he made a good point.
When the power supply socket thing went a couple of weeks ago my Dad went into the laptop to mend it, and he reckons they won't want anything to do with it. Obviously we didn't know about this EU regulation then and just thought it was out of warranty so we were on our own.0 -
ah yes sounds like possiable your dad may have not nessecarily put it back right (it might be an easy fix then but could be its been badly damaged inside bits must some out and go in in a ceratin order) also yes toshiba will not touch it unless you pay them to put it right now but that may be expensive it may not could still phone and ask the question( i suspect they will look at it and give you a charge just too look inside first of all) if is too expensive i would bite the bullet and just get a new one but i would buy something rather different if i where you.0
