Have now done this but unfortunately when I play the converted version in media player there is now no picture. Thanks for your help so far, but do you have any other ideas please?

    Hi
I think that those bitrates are too high for Windows Movie Maker and Windows Media Player to handle, that's why they judder.
It might be better if you convert them to a type that's compatible.
    There's a program called Winff.
This has an option to convert to 'MS Compatible AVI'.
You can download it from here:-
    http://winff.org/html_new/

When you want to convert choose:-

    'Convert to... AVI'
    'Device Preset MS Compatible AVI'.

Before you convert it, make a backup copy of your video and give it a different name because when you convert it you'll over-write the original one.

Will you put the converted video into MediaInfo and post the output please.

To convert the file to different formats try downloading this free program called Super....http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html This will take some time to master to get what you want, but it will do it.

To play a certain format without appropriate codecs on your PC, and this includes a really decent player for free try going to CCCP click here.

Your bit rates are sky high (even at Blu-Ray bit rates), I am surprised you get anything at all on your PC. Perhaps some finger trouble with the transfer from camera to PC?

Thanks will bear that program in mind. Sorry to be a bit thick, but what do you mean by "finger trouble"?

Your output from MediaInfo shows that the video has been converted correctly. The codecs and bitrates are the same as my example.
To play the file in Windows Media Player and Movie Maker you need to install a DivX codec.
You can follow the CCCP link in Paul_R's post above. That will get you a whole pack of codecs and another media player.

Alternatively you can just install the one correct codec on its own - which is all you need.
To do this go to this link:-http://www.divxmovies.com/codec/
Download the DivX codec v6.8.5 for Windows XP/2000/Vista.
When you've downloaded it you get a file DivXinstaller.exe.
Click on this file to install it.
When you install it un-tick all the unnecessary boxes or else you will get another media player and a toolbar and e-mails etc. So just install the codec on its own.

Thank you, I will do that. I have found another solution (sort of) by converting the file from avi to wmv in Prism Video Converter. The converted video plays fine other than it is upside down, but I'm sure you know that Windows Movie Maker can flip the video 180 anyway so it is not a major problem. However, your solution is less fiddly so will use that if it works - otherwise Plan B will have to do I think.

Many thanks for all your time and trouble.

OK, now I will explain how to use your WinFF program to remove the sound from an AVI file while you're converting it.
Before you start make sure you have a backup file with a different name.
    Then open WinFF as before.
Add your AVI file (the one from your camcorder).
    Same settings as before :-
    Convert to ... AVI
    Device Preset MS Compatible AVI.

Now look in the top right hand corner of WinFF, there is a button that says 'Options'.
When you click on that button another panel opens at the bottom of WinFF that says 'Additional Options'.
Click on the tab that says 'Additional Command Line Parameters (Advanced)'.
A window now shows where you have to put in an instruction.
    You type:-
    -an

    Then do the conversion.
The -an tells it 'No audio'. You just get a silent movie.

By the way, that other program 'Super' is an excellent program but WinFF is easier to use.
