AVI file won't play properly in Windows Movie Maker/Media Player

I have a Sony camcorder which is probably 4/5 years old and records onto tape. It has the facility to download to pc via Sony's Video Capturing Tool which I have done and the resulting files were saved as .avi. The disc which came with the camcorder (Picture Package) allows me to view the files but not edit them which I want to do in Windows Movie Maker. I duly imported the .avi file to movie maker, but when I tried to play it to edit it, both the video and audio judder. I tried opening the .avi file in Windows Media Player and the same thing happened. When playing through Picture Package they are absolutely fine. I used "Any Video Converter" to convert the files to .wmv in the hope that this would work, however although there is no judder now the video footage plays too fast so is out of sync with the audio (have tried changing settings in Any Video Converter as they suggest in their help pages for this problem, but to no avail).
I would really appreciate it if someone could help me sort this out.
Many thanks in advance.

Hi, thanks for your reply but have tried a few alternatives but does the same in all0 -
Hi
There's a program called 'MediaInfo'.
This will analyse an avi file and tell you exactly which codecs have been used and what bitrates etc.
When we know that information there's a chance we can help more.
Here is MediaInfo

Thank you for your reply. Have followed link and clicked that I use Windows but then I have a choice of GUI, CLI or DLL - GUI and DLL say "without installer". Also, how do I know if I need "32 bit" or "64 bit" please?Hi

Ok
You need the one that says GUI.
I don't know which type of system you have, 32 or 64.
I don't know how to tell that either, maybe someone else knows how.
But if you download the 32 bit version I think that it will work on either system.
But I reckon that the 64 bit version will only work on 64 bit systems.
So if you're not sure, download the 32 bit GUI version.

Ok, all done and added one of the files. Do you need the information in "container and general info" box, "first video stream" box or "first audio stream" box please? Or something different altogether as it says for more info I can select a different view?Ok

Oh, just selected "tree" and it says the video codec is RGB and bit rate 45.0 Mbps and the audio codec PCM and bit rate 1 411.2 Kbps- is this what you need?Ok, all done and added one of the files. Hi
I think that those bitrates are too high for Windows Movie Maker and Windows Media Player to handle, that's why they judder.
It might be better if you convert them to a type that's compatible.
There's a program called Winff.
This has an option to convert to 'MS Compatible AVI'.
You can download it from here:-
http://winff.org/html_new/
When you want to convert choose:-
'Convert to... AVI'
'Device Preset MS Compatible AVI'.
Before you convert it, make a backup copy of your video and give it a different name because when you convert it you'll over-write the original one.
