  • Simple questions:-

    1) Does MMS work with another phone and that SIM ?

    2) Have you entered all the settings shown at http://www.filesaveas.com/mms.html#virgin ?

    3) Does everything else (internet, e-mail client etc) work OK ?

    Should be

    APN: goto.virginmobile.uk

    You could also try

    MMS Proxy: 193.30.166.2

    Which fixed it for me.

Same problem here & virgin are hopeless!!!! where do i go to enter these settings?
  • I have a work around that worked for me. I couldn't enter the MMS APN settings because the menu is locked by Virgin on my iphone 3gs.
I put a spare giff gaff sim card in the phone, the menu I needed was now available
Settings - Network - Cellular data network
then entered the settings for virgin from this web page filesaveas dot com (can't post a link)
Once I had entered the settings I took out the giff gaff sim card, put the virgin one back in (that menu was now hidden again) and lo and behold after a restart my phone is on the Virgin network with MMS fully operational!
I used giff gaff because i had one lying around but you could try one of those 99p sims like O2 or another provider that supports iphone.:)
  • I have recently fallen heir to an iphone4 and eventually got a Virgin micro card. Everything seemed good until I had a look at my bill! I contacted customer services (?) and had the normal less than fulfilling experience. It seems, according to Virgin that some handsets interpret long messages as pictures and apply the 40p charge. It also seems that even small messages sent to more than recipient also attract this charge. Virgin of course just maintained their usual hard-nosed stance - not our problem, just pay up.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and are there any fixes out there?
    Thanks

It's the network that applies charges, not a handset.
AFAIK, the maximum length of a SMS (Short Message Service) is 70-160 characters (depending on the characters). Some phones have an option to split automatically long messages into shorter ones. Otherwise it has to be sent as MMS. Check the settings of your messaging app.
  • Thanks Grumbler for your reply. I'll have another go at the settings.

That's brilliant thank you, Luckily I too had a giffgaff sim to use.
Why can't virgin enable the settings in the first place.

It's the messaging app itself that decides when to convert to MMS. Samsung handsets convert to MMS when the character limit reaches 640 characters, although modding the messaging app to send a message in excess of 2000 characters as a standard "multi-part" SMS is quite easy.
