cold computer-not switching on!

sounds like a dodgy PSU to me too. I had a shuttle PC that had the same problem. I would have to press the power button for ages before it would turn on , changed the PSU and all sorted. I very much doubt the cold weather has anything to do it with it.0

what is the psu, would i be able to change it myself or is it a specialist job?Nice to save.0

Definately PSU. www.ebuyer.com.
They're simple enough to change, but if you don't know what you're buying you may need to find a techie. Don't go to some ripoff store, find someone who knows from your friends/relatives. There's going to be someone!
edit PSU is Power Supply Unit.0 -
I think it's pure coincidence, but you might wait until it's a bit warmer to see if the problem remains.
PSU change is an easy DIY job (assuming it is a desktop PC and not a laptop), you just need to ensure you buy a PSU of the same or greater rating than the old one.
Or any independent repair shop (not PCW please) can do it for you for about £25 +the PSU cost,No free lunch, and no free laptop

sorry, we were being silly :j, the PSU suggestions are probably quite close to the mark, tho useful to check if your power button is a normal 'push button' type and not anythign fancy and non-standard (eg touch sensitive)
what might be worth checking is the cable connectng the power button to the motherboard hasn;t been disturbed -will be 2 wires comming from it down to the motherboard (unless its very old) and might be worth popping the side off to quickly check they are firmly slotted onto the motherboard pins and one isn;t half hanging off.0 -
had a lot of pc's be unhappy to start when cold (odd as i would of thought the colder the happier they would of been)
anyway it happens.0 -
Condensation can build up inside a pc case when its very cold.
Whether this shorts the motherboard temporarily or causes damage i'm not sure.0 -
im goona be a bone of contention here i used to electronics test tech we used to get products and stuff them into a climate chamber take it down temp turn it up also and see where it would fall over. cold can cause it to fall over and would usally be chips on the board also can get badly solder joints but for my 10pence i would just say its not the psu yet could just be paying out for nothing i would put it in another warmer room away from this window and see how it goes for about a week before making any decesion about buying any new bits. if you can't move it or put in a warmer room you got another choice once you get it switched on leave it on but know you will have a higher electric bill.
if this room is so cold atm why dont you use some seondary glazing film like these http://www.google.co.uk/products?hl=en&source=hp&q=secondary%20glazing%20film&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wf0
