A whoopsie or YS = reduced section at the supermarket. YS = yellow sticker. In the past I have got like a bag of carrots 20p, an extra 20p makes that into a good few portions of soup!
Sweating veg first - usually best before adding stock , develops flavours
I wouldnt add a lot of cream, and wouldnt just chuck brocolli or cabbage into any soup as they are strong tastes. But you will learn what goes with what.
Regards blending, it's entirely up to personal preferenceSometimes I do, sometimes I don't. A good hand blender will suffice but research
Stick blender
Most things can be made into soup. Even remains of roast dinner
Definitely pick a few recipes to master first if that makes you comfortable, then start making your own upA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

I've recently started to use my Pressure Cooker for soup-making. MUCH quicker than both the slow cooker AND the hob
.

I also just use all the bits of veg I have left over from other meals. Have a big pan of veg soup cooking at the moment - onions, carrots, parsnips, swede and potato and some pearl barley as OH loves itWe don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.0

You absolutely do NOT need a slow cooker for soup! Some people find them conveinient but I can't stand the things.

I make soup at least once a week especially for weekend family lunches. i usually start it at about 11.30 for lunch at 12.30. Mostly it takes less time especially if it is just veg.
Homemade chicken stock really improves soupPlenty of info on making this on the board.

I make a one with any old thing I find in the fridge tht needs using up sharpish....
Try this one, it's our favourite....
Abot 180g (about a third of a packet) of lentils
2 tomatoes
half an onion (red is really good) chopped
If you have a red or orange pepper, or I keep a bag of frozen peppers in, a good handful
a carrot or 2......chopped very small
Maybe a couple of mushroom in there.
1 chicken oxo, chopped
1 beef oxo
salt and pepper
a slight sprinkle of garlic granules (you don't want to taste the garlic, just add a little bit)
Just boil it in about a pint and half of water, simmer for about 20 minutes then blend it if you want to....

I made this lentil soup the other day and it has lasted all week with a portion for tomorrow as well. I added some chilli flakes for a kick.

I also did half green and half red lentils but I see no reason why you couldn't use all red and then you don't need to pre soak.My debt free diary | Post Office loan: £2131 1429.38 | Barclaycard: £4429 1988.12 | Paypal Credit £322.71 574.91 | Monzo Flex £169.03 |

My Monday lunch is always "Sunday Lunch soup", the bits from Sunday all cooked up together - chopped up roast potatoes make an amazing addition to soup. I have loads of portions of "Christmas Dinner" soup in the freezer as well. I also keep a plastic bag in the freezer and add whatever bits of cooked veg are leftover from each weekday meal - these, with a bit of stock make fabulous quick soups.0

Morrisons have a bag of carrots for 35p at the moment - one onion, garlic, ginger (powder is fine), the carrots, veg stock - I got 10 portions out of it for the freezer. Reckon that's OK!0

Thanks for that recipe Lilian, I've a jar of those yellow split peas, could I throw some of those in, or is there another recipe to use them up? I keep forgetting they are there when I make a stew.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

Yellow split peas may take longer to cook but the recipe would work fine. You could just pour a bit of water over them and soak for half and hour to help them on their way.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
