Car crash advice needed.

I disagree and think your post is the "utter nonsense". A car does not just "pick up momentum" without an influencing factor - usually the engine but could also be gravity or even wind.
Since the OP made no mention of a hill or wind or any other influencing factor then only his own speed could have caused his speed on the ice.
Ok without the ice he would have had better traction to take the bend but you have to drive to the conditions and he clearly wasn't.
Finally - I have made no insult towards the OP, neither have most of the other posters, they just pointed out bluntly (and to the OP's dislike) that it was his own fault and no one elses.0 -
If, instead of metal gates, a pedestrian had been standing where the gates were, and the pedestrians legs were crushed - would the OP still be trying to avoid liability and blaming the owners of the private drive ??0

Yea I did get that impression. Sounded like a young bloke, but at least it wasn't an Indian call center

I did think of that, for such a piddly amount, I doubt this is going to be hitting the high court anytime soon. How much can some big stupid gate type thing cost anyway?
Of course the other thing I thought of now, if they decide the car must be repaired, as it's 10 years old and technically worthless "on paper", just hoping they don't do anything silly and write it off. I had another check this morning and it is just bumper, plate, etc. Still though, insurance do weird things.
For an old car with minor damage like this it can work in your favour for them to write the car off. For instance if the car is worth £1000 they will normally allow you to buy the salvage off them for circa £250. This means you have £750 to get the repairs done. You can get the parts from a scarp yard and / or get a cash deal from a garage who may use non genuine parts. Its not unusual for people to get their car repaired and have money left over.
(If the Insurers repair the car they are normally required to use new genuine parts and have relatively high labour costs to pay)
P.S When you come on a forum you have to accept that anyone can post, you may not like it if someone else' opinion differs from your opinion. However that is life and they are entitled to their opinion. I do not agree with all of the posts Annihalter et al post on the entire MSE forum. However they have a right to post, in addition it allows a prope debate instead of everyone blowing smoke up your 'arris plus it also gives posters the view they may come up against eg from your Insurance company.
If you are not prepared to have people post opinions that differ from your own then internet forums are not for you. Everyone has a different view which is what make the UK such a great place0 -

Oh for the love of... "What if instead of metal gates, a frail sweet old lady with a flowery bonnet and a box full of hungry kittens, holding hands with a 5yr old girl with blonde pigtails and incurable cancer, followed by a hoarde of starving Ethiopians and a single lame donkey were for some reason standing in the middle of the road drowning in a sea of their own tears which your car subsequentlly slipped on and YOU MOWED THEM ALL DOWN YOU TERRIBLE TERRIBLE PERSON"
There weren't, there wasn't. Get a life.0 -

Well, I suppose in those circumstances you would have to accept that you would be liable and lose your No Claim Bonus ! - as will be the case in the OP opening version of events0 -
What, even if there were hoardes of sick people and kittens wandering around in the road icing the place up with their watery heartbreak?
50/50 at least

if there was that many people and animals in the road you would stand a chance of not hitting at least one of them!! OMG i would in a mad state of affairs aim for the middle, the chances are most would run to the edge.
What a mad mad statement!!!
