well Slither, I was doing less in an Asda car park when my car skidded on ice and the wheel was damaged. They offered to pay for damage straight away and I went to a garage, had the work done and the store paid me in cash. They had gritted the whole car park, except for the area that I had crashed on. Surely if they were willing to pay so easily, there must be some fault on their part?

Can't say without seeing the turn, but 15mph while approaching a turn in this weather with a high possibility of ice does seem very excessive.

    Again... 15mph... excessive?

Yes of course, you lost control of your vehicle, walking pace would probably have been more appropriate for the conditions that you described.

Or maybe just stationary altogether? Lol!

Insurance reported, they seem to think that there's something to talk about so I've left it in their capable hands.

Don't hold your breathe, as the staff whoo take details of claims are often poorly trained so have little technical knowledge. Taking up claims against third parties are normally dealt with by skilled staff due to the technical knowledge required. Even if the third party is technically liable Insurers do not alway pursue / defend the claim for lowish amounts as it's not always economically viable

Yea I did get that impression. Sounded like a young bloke, but at least it wasn't an Indian call center :D

I did think of that, for such a piddly amount, I doubt this is going to be hitting the high court anytime soon. How much can some big stupid gate type thing cost anyway?

Of course the other thing I thought of now, if they decide the car must be repaired, as it's 10 years old and technically worthless "on paper", just hoping they don't do anything silly and write it off. I had another check this morning and it is just bumper, plate, etc. Still though, insurance do weird things.

can run over the 1k mark if it needs replacing and is not just an Off the shelf gate. It totally depends on what type of gate it is and its size. The metalcrafter i know just did some gates for local house, gateway normal driveway width and that cost £1200 before the fitting, more than i'd pay for some gates for sure

Posts 2 and 3 answered the question nicely despite the OP not being happy with the answer.

I also agree that 15mph in these conditions is excessive - if it wasn't then the accident would never have happened, end of story.

I would have just paid for the gates repair myself rather than going through the insurance. I'm not sure of the full t&c's but will the OP lose his no claims and also have to declare that he has had an accident and a claim next time he takes out insurance now = lots higher cost!??!

on our local news yesterday was a video of a ford KA, pulling out of a parking space, before the rear wheels had even got to the postion of where the front wheels were when the car was stationary the car had started to slide sideways (Slight downward incline) as the car started to slide it picked up momentum till it got 100 yards down the road and smacked into a lamp post, all this was caught on video. The driver was interviewed after the accident and she said that she couldn't have been moving more than 1-2mph as she was creeping out of the space. My point is the speed is irrelvant once you lose traction and you start to slide there isn't much you can do about it apart from waiting till something that cant be moved stops you!!
So to say that the accident wouldn't have happened if the op was driving slower is utter nonsense.
I dont think the OP has a claim for the roads being ungritted and maybe the OP shouldn't have even been out in these conditions as most forecasters have said to only got out if necessary, personally the Gym doesn't count!!
But the OP asked for advice not insults!

I find it highly unlikely that a store, such as Asda, would agree so readily to pay up like this and particularly with cash. But then a lot of things you come out with seem very doubtful.
