If the property is bigger than a 1-bed, the LL might have issues over where you'd get the money to afford the rent if you should both lose your jobs as LHA won't cover more.

Or maybe there was simply an administrative c0ck up, which is quite common with people who forget they're dealing with peoples lives when dealing with any housing issues.
  • Hi everyone - thankyou for your feed back - been really helpfull!:o

well went round this to the house earlier this morning with my MIL to be and we were let in, first thing LL said was she wanted someone who could move in earlier than feb. It does appear though the new dates werent mentioned at all, and i said we were informed by text the place wasnt to rent and it was all confusing etc.
My MIL was fab too, trying to ask questions etc.
I said that we have the deposit rent etc, can move in within 2-3 weeks time if that is what was needed, as she said she is looking to move within 3 weeks. Said that we want somewhere as our home, not wanting to be moving every few years, we got wedding to plan, want to think bout starting a family etc. to be honest think was a waste of time, she didnt seem bothered at all, just said that she got 3 other people going to view so depends when they are available to move in and it is her choice.
so god knows what we did wrong, :confused:but i dont think i am going to hear anything back at all.

Thankyou for everyones comments and support on this though :o)

So why not move in by the end of the month?

As a LL, I wouldn't accept a void of 40 days. I can see why she rejected you

Yes but it's not really a void as the LL is still living there. This is her first let.

It does sound like for whatever reason she has decided against the OP. It could be anything: race (illegal but impossible to prove), age, personality, date to move in, bloody-mindedness, references, or just 'a feeling'.

As this is a new LL, moving out of her own home, there could be a degree of uncertainty about her own plans, how to deal with tenants, and what exactly she's trying to achieve.

For some reason the LL doesn't want to rent to you on face value.

I've had it before. I'm an EA, my wife worked full time so pulling in good money between us. We went into an agent in Ashtead, Surrey, known only as Jacqui Quinn (can I post names??) who refused to view with us and show us the property we wanted to see. This house was well within our budget, in the perfect location etc and brand new - just what the wife wanted.

The agent left the wife a voicemail the next day, to the following effect:

"I'm terrible sorry Ms X, but that property is aimed at less chavv... ahem, tenants of a more professional manner. That ones not for you.".

The only think making us 'chavvy' was that we were both early/mid 20s and expecting a baby. Even though this was the agent making a decision on behalf of the LL, I'm inclined to believe its similar to your predicament.

Needless to say, I spoke to the agent (in person of course), informed them of our situation, and was very pleased to rent from the agent next door (literally) a property that very same day.

Ah well, rant over. But avoid JQ estate agents if you have a pregnant wife - they like to appear above everyone else.

Is it true you cannot refuse to rent a property because of race?
Hard one to prove i suspect.....

Personally, i would not rent my house to a different race, regardless of the law.
