British Gas knocked a third off my boiler quote!

British Gas came round just after Christmas and quoted me £4,100 for a new boiler, thermostatic valves and three new radiators. They applied some discounts on the day and it came in at £3,600.
I've just had a call from them and they will offer me an extra third off the quote! They've told me this doesn't include the scrappage scheme discount if my boiler is eligible (don't think it is anyway).
I was hoping if anyone has had any similar experiences and if they've managed to get the quote reduced anymore?
I've also got Npower coming to quote next week too and was hoping they might match it or try to better it.
I needed the system flushing too and was hoping if anyone had experience of haggling the price of that too? Ultimately I was hoping Npower to come in cheaper then BG, and then get them to match and try and do a deal on the flushing.
Anyone managed to do similar?

That's still £2400, sounds like a lot to me. Why not get a few quotes from local independent plumbers?
And why do you think your system needs flushing? For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0 -
My new boiler cost £1300 fitted by a local plumber, so I'd shop around if I were you....I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

Had 2 other quotes for around £2k and £2.5k, neither included the extra rads or new thermo valves.
Been told it needs flushing because of some build-up and the rads aren't getting as hot as they should.2p off is still 2p off!0 -
Just to add, my boiler was supplied and fitted for £1400. Also local bloke!:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:0

TPVs are cheap. They will be noise in the overall price... 3 rads won't be that much either. I doubt whether the materials are going to cost more than £1000 max.
As for flushing, is it just me or is this a big con? I'd never heard of it before reading this forum, in my last house (1950's semi) the system was never flushed in the 20 years I was there, never had any problems. For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0 -
got a plummer earlier this year from the Federation of
master builders for mine.new boiler,4 radiaters
with thremostaic valves and one heated
towel rail.My central heating broke down
five years ago had been unused since then so had to
have new pipe work on some of it,also removed a dodgy old gas fire
All in £1,600,he quoted the full cost at the beginning
of the job and stuck to his price.Like you I would have gone
with British Gas but mine was in the £3,500/£4000 bracket.:j:j:j0 -

Yes but by who? Someone with a vested interest? For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0 -
My parents where very happy with there British gas installed boiler converted from a hot water tank to a combi, but it was expensive but they did get cavity wall insulation for free. They had a radiator go pop when they switched on the system but it was promptly replaced and a faulty input filter as well that leaked a wee bit but they was quickly sort ie next day as well.0
