HTC Hero/Orange/Vodafone problem

Hi
I recently switched from Vodafone to Orange to get the HTC Hero. The phone arrived on Monday and I ported my number immediately and it went through today.
However I am having serious reception problems. I checked the coverage before I switched and it said I should have good coverage - therefore I expected I would at least get some signal. However I don't really get any signal - bizarrely sometimes I will get 2 or 3 bars and then it will disappear without me even moving! When I search for other networks, it only shows O2 as being in range most of the time - and I know I can get Vodafone.
Basically I am wondering whether:
1) it is worth me seeing if it is a problem with the phone and asking for a replacement
or
2) Cancelling my contract within the 7 day period and going back to Vodafone (and get another phone). If I did go back, would I be able to switch my phone number back?
Sorry for the long-winded post and thanks in advance for the help!

I've heard about problems with the Hero and picking up signal. I would recommend that you give Orange a phone to discuss the problems with them and then either ask for a different handset or cancel the contract.
If you are cancelling the contract, ask for your PAC code to transfer back to Vodafone.0 -
Have you got Orange BB at home with a Livebox ?0

Sadly I don't - and tied into a contract for 12 months.
Think I will do what jclegs suggested and cancel with Orange and port my number back to Vodafone. I am considering going via a 3rd party so I can get a Vodafone contract but still have an HTC Hero, as I know I can get good Vodafone signal here.
Thanks everyone!0
