Working 16 hours can I get any help?

We are a couple with 2 young kids. I am a housewife.
DH had a temporary xmas job before christmas, but has now signed on again.

My question is, if he took a job that was 16 hours a week,@ £6.00 per hour, would we get any extra help (Income support?).

I have gone on 'Entitledto.com' but it only states about getting Tax credit and HB/CTB.

What we are wondering is, would a 16 hour job be worth applying for?

Under what grounds do you think you would qualify for income support???

Better having a job even if its just 16 hours than nothing and relying on benefits is it not? Gets you out the house and it could lead to more hours.

You won't qualify for IS, however I suspect WTC would be more than IS.

Thank you, there seem to be a lot of bored people making unhelpful comments at the moment.

Back to the origional question eh.Can't believe how some people just wait to get a kick in!

I appreciate what you're asking and of course in the ideal world we would all heve the jobs we'd like for a decent income but it's just not like that these days.
The quote of any job is better than no job is so wrong. As parents we have to make sure that we can support the family we have and that the job pays enough for us to do that.
It is my belief that if you or your partner work 16 hours a week or more then all entitlement to job seekers allowance or income support would stop. You would then be able to apply for working tax credits and child tax credits. You can check out the Inland revenue website to give you guidance on that.
The job centre would also be able to give you a better off calculation which would take your income now and compare it to what it would be should your partner be working 16hrs.It might be worth giving them a ring.
I'm sure more people will be along to give you help.Good luck :)
lost my way but now I'm back ! roll on 2013

  • you will most likely be entitled to all of the following HB/CTB, WTC & CTC! you wont get income support.

Its def worth applying for the job though, a 16 hour a week job is better than no job. Hope all goes well for you.

Including hb/ctb i get £24440 on income support.
Working 16 hours a week, total income £18000. inc HB/ctb.
Plus i would then loose my school dinners and free school tansport for kids on top.
