Double Glazing in Scotland

Hi guys

purchased a house in December and i think it still has the original steel framed windows in it when it was built ( 50+years ago ) they have been upgraded and been fitted with double glazed units since but still orig frames

anyways do any MSE members have good experiences with DG companys in Scotland

i seen a few in the paper advertising
Advanced Windows 5 windows and 2 door from £1695
Superior Home Improvements 7 windows and 2 doors from £1650

this is my first house and obviously first time buying windows so i don't to be taken for a ride

i need 9 windows and 2 doors

  • Not sure where you're based - if it's in central belt, would recommend First Choice Repairs. We used them for DG repairs (we have alum DG windows like you probably have but have kept them) and a back door replacement. Very happy with service from Johnny who did the work, made a good job of door despite best efforts of a wall which crumbled on him. Pretty sure they do new installs too.

Recommend you run a google search (search for: "company name" scotland glazing reviews) for the company names you mention - the first throws up a couple of negative reviews.

    Hi

    i am in Fife

i have a couple companys coming out

    Dalmation Windows tonight
    Perfect Glazing tomorrow night
    CR Smith saturday morning

so hopefully i will get a couple decent prices, maybe some on high end ( CR smith and some on the low end )

Only problem i have with your recommendation is the old frames, aren't nice, they are hideous metal frames that look like they have never been replaced in this ex-council property..

they condensate so bad to the point of water gathering on my window sill like you have poured a cup of water

cr Smith are expensive. You might be better getting a quote from a smaller independant. Any decent joiner will be able to source and fit good quality windows.

Where about in Fife? I was born in the lang toon

Yeah, know that problem ...we have the same issue here. Just be aware that changing the windows may not fix the problem. I've not replaced ours until I've tried other things first - I suspect our drying of clothes indoors/etc is probably making it worse than it needs to be. There is an interesting thread about window condensation here.

Good luck - and if you do replace and find it helps let me know! :D
  • I use Dalmation (Trade Frames Direct) regulary on a supply only basis, good company to deal with.

Make sure that any windows you install have vents installed to comply with Scottish building regs.

  • I'm looking for new windows and patio doors and having been 'researching' for two weeks I have not seen any company in Scotland who has had consistant good reports or recommendations and all seem to be flawed in some way. The previous poster mentioned Dalmatian and I have also seen adverse reports for them too!!!

I am stuck... can anyone truly recommend a company (Edinburgh or Lothians) to supply and fit about 7 windows also (sliding or opening) patio doors? THANKS

If they're already double glazed, putting new windows in isn't going to give that much of an improvement. If new windows cost £3400 the heating savings are going to take many, many years to repay the cost... even at £100 a year saving which is probably optimistic it'll take 34 years.

If the house is prone to condensation, as my previous flat was, UPVC double glazing won't necessarily improve it. We had UPVC double glazing there and water still pooled on the windowsills in the morning. New house has the same type of windows and gets virtually no condensation. Difference was the first was c. 1860, this 1949 built.
