Elderly neighbours in the cold weather

Just a little note that we should all be looking out for our elderly and disabled neighbours who can't get out in this bad weather.
Just sent DS up to see an old lady up the road who lives on her own, to check if she is ok. He has just come back to say that she has no food in and is not putting her heating on because she is scared of the cost so DS told her off (he is 15) and told her to put the heating on and has come back to me and told me what is going on. Luckily I have plenty in so I have made her up a box of bits and DS is going to take her up a hot meal tonight.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

  • what a good DS you have :D

I have my Gran living next to me so I've been in this morning to check on her, luckily she has plenty of food in & my hubs picked her up some bits last night & she is toasty warm

I also have my Mum popping in to see her this morning so at least we know she'll have had some company today - that is really important too my poor Gran feels so curt off & lonely when she can't get out - even popping in for a cuppa can make someone's day

Good idea and something I do when the weather is particularly bad. None of our neighbours need anything at the moment but I have said that we'll call each morning to see if it changes.

My parents are both very healthy (most of the time!) & mobile at 76 and 69 respectively but don't want to risk breaking something slipping outside so a neighbour of theirs is going to the Co-Op if they need anything every day. I am so grateful as it means I don't have to worry about them as we can't get up there very easily to see them ourselves.

Sky news said the government will be making extra payments to old people for heating so to tell them not to worry.

I have been and collected neighbours paper today and yesterday - he cant be without it but he slipped about a week ago whilst collecting it so is worried to go out when it is bad. He is ok for milk and bread too.

    T xx
  • This morning I had a conversation with my son who is 13, we discussed how older ppl may not be able to get out and may not have sufficent supplies, he suggested we wrap up warm and knock on doors in the next day or two if it continues to snow.

It's nice to have kids who care about other ppl .....well done butterfly brain

Just been to check on the lady next door. She says she is fine as her family live nearby and have been brining her things in when she needs them. Stood and had a natter at the door for five and I'm freezing now, lol.

It's nice to read about so many people checking in on others, restores my faith in humanity!

We are all completely snowed in round here but we have a Neighbourhood Watch Group with everybody linked in by e-mail. This morning several members have e-mailed round offering to get shopping in for anybody in difficulties. It's the people without this e-mail communication link like the very elderly, who are the most vulnerable and isolated in these conditions who especially need looking out for.

I'm ashamed to say I needed this thread to nudge my conscience! Done my neighbourly duty now though and posted on Facebook for others to do the same.
  • just a word to ask everyone to check on their elderly neighbours in this cold spell. I was worried when I heard about the old people in Cumbria and Nottingham who were found dead in their back gardens so I have been out checking on my neighbours who are frail. They may need bread and milk fetching from the local shop if you are passing by, please help. Many thanks DH :)
